A page wide piezoelectric ink jet print engine and a method of manufacturing the same. The page wide ink jet print engine includes lower and upper body parts, each formed from piezoelectric material and having a plurality of generally parallel, spaced projections. Lower side surfaces of the projections of the lower body part are conductively mounted to corresponding bottom side surfaces of the projections of the upper body part to define a plurality of generally parallel, axially extending ink-carrying channels from which ink may be ejected. The lower and upper body parts are then circumferentially poled such that, for the lower body part, first and second polarization fields respectively extend between the top side surface of each one of the projections and top side surfaces of first and second projections adjacent thereto and, for the upper body part first and second polarization fields respectively extend between the bottom side surface of each one of the projections and bottom side surfaces of first and second projections adjacent thereto. By applying voltage to selective ones of the projections, the channels may be selectively expanded to draw ink from an associated ink delivery system and compressed to cause the ejection of a droplet of ink therefrom.

Disclosed is a method of manufacturing an ink jet printhead comprising the steps of: (1) coating a substantially flat lower surface of an upper piezoelectric member with a first conductive coating, (2) coating a substantially flat upper surface of a lower piezoelectric member with a second conductive coating, (3) depositing a conductive metal over the first conductive coating, (4) forming a first elongated indentation in the lower surface, the first indentation extending through the first coating and into the upper member, (5) joining the metal with the second conductive coating by placing the upper piezoelectric member over the lower piezoelectric member, (6) inducing a current in the metal with an electromagnetic field having a specified frequency to thereby melt the metal and (7) cooling the metal, the metal electrically and mechanically joining the first coating to the second coating, the first indentation and the upper surface thereby forming the channel, the channel capable of containing ink and capable of ejecting ink therefrom when an electric current distorts the upper and lower piezoelectric members. The specified frequency allows the electromagnetic field to melt the metal completely without unduly heating the piezoelectric members.

Method and apparatus are provided for determining the formation pressure. The magnitude of formation pressure may be derived as a function of changes in bottomhole pressure following swabbing the borehole to draw formation fluids into the borehole, monitoring the borehole for influx of formation fluids, determining the reduced pressure due to swabbing, repeating the swabbing and monitoring steps until an influx of formation fluids is detected thereby determining the pressure of the formation.

Method and apparatus for determining formation pressure

A system for detecting changes in drilling fluid density downhole during a drilling operation includes a radiation source and detector which are arranged in the outer wall of a drill string sub to measure the density of drilling fluids passing between the source and detector. Radiation counts detected downhole are transmitted to the surface by telemetry methods or recorded downhole, where such counts are analyzed to determine the occurrence of fluid influx into the drilling fluid from earth formations. Changes in the density of the mud downhole may indicate the influx of formation fluids into the borehole. Such changes in influx are determinative of formation parameters including surpressures which may lead to the encountering of gas kicks in the borehole. Gas kicks may potentially result in blowouts, which of course are to be avoided if possible. Hydrocarbon shows may also be indicative of producible formation fluids. The radiation source and detector in one embodiment of the system are arranged in the wall of the drill string sub to provide a direct in-line transmission of gamma rays through the drilling fluid.

Borehole influx detector and method

An impeller having an axle with radial vanes is mounted within a housing. The housing includes a funnel to direct a large amount of wind into the impeller. Air fins on top of the housing maintain the funnel pointed into the wind. A flap upon the top of the housing will fold downward as the wind increases and this will raise a throttle valve at the throat of the funnel. In addition, the flap will close exhaust openings from the housing, also reducing the wind on the vanes. Two additional flaps act as pressure relief valves in the funnel which open to dump wind at excessive velocity. Furthermore, a leeward flap on the side of the funnel is blown out to an extended position at high winds which causes the housing to rotate upon its circular tracks to bring the funnel opening away from the wind. The air fins on top of the housing are blown down from the vertical position as the wind strikes the housing sideways. The housing is mounted upon a frame which extends horizontally outward from the housing. The frame is mounted by wheels upon concentric rails. Therefore, the housing can be maintained directly into moderate winds by rotating around upon the rails or high winds will cause the housing to rotate away from the wind. The large frame prevents the unit from blowing over.
