A modular jack connector compensates for plug characteristics via a controlled primary compensation in the immediate vicinity of the connector interface. A jack contact assembly is positioned within a jack housing and includes first and second sets of elongate contacts each having a plug contact portion and a signal output portion. Each elongate contact is configured such that their respective plug contact portions are coplanar and a signal path is defined between their plug contact portions and their signal output portions. A flexible circuit board is coupled proximate to the plug contact portions, and configured to provide capacitance compensation between respective contacts engaged thereby, wherein the capacitance compensation is offset from a signal path defined between the plug contact portions and the corresponding signal output portions.

Modular jack contact assembly having controlled capacitive coupling positioned within a jack housing

A modular RJ45-type plug apparatus is provided for forming a connector interface with a connector jack in a high speed data transmission network. A housing comprises an insulative front portion and a conductive shield portion attachable to define an interior, within which is positioned a contact subassembly including a first PCB having cable mounting pads on one end and through holes for elongate plug contacts on the other end. The contacts are connected on one end to the first PCB and on a second end to a second PCB, with bridge portions therebetween collectively defining a jack contact interface. The second PCB comprises desired electrical characteristics which provide the apparatus with certain capacitance compensation properties, wherein the capacitance compensation is offset from a signal path defined between the jack-plug connector interface and the cable pairs.

Modular plug connector with multilayer PCB for very high speed applications

A modular connector plug includes controlled capacitances to compensate for near end cross talk at the connector interface created by interaction of signals having signal frequencies in a data transmission bandwidth. A printed circuit board (PCB) is configured to receive cable pairs, and a connector assembly includes first and fourth plug contacts corresponding to the first cable pair and second and third plug contacts corresponding to the second cable pair. First ends of each contact are connected to the PCB, and second ends extend in parallel with each other and transversely to the PCB length, collectively defining a contact interface proximate the contact end. Each contact has a maximum width at the contact interface, with at least one plug contact having a maximum width greater than the maximum width of another plug contact. Each contact accordingly defines an electrode of a compensating capacitance formed between adjacent pairs of plug contacts.

A network interface connector includes a plurality of first and second alternating elongate contacts having contact portions situated in a common plane. The first and second contacts have rearward portions situated in respective first and second spaced parallel planes defining a proximity gap between them. A proximity insert having a particular electrical construction suited for a particular application is situated, preferably in a replaceable manner, in the proximity gap to provide the connector with desired transmission properties.

The wire guide filter includes an impedance containing portion comprising a longitudinally extending body having a plurality of longitudinally extending passageways and an internal cable guide portion comprising a longitudinally extending body defining a plurality of longitudinally extending passageways.

A method and system for terminating a cable into a plug using a plug assembly system. Wires of the cable are exposed and dressed on to a shield. A plug body is placed over the shield. The wires are fed into wire insertion holes of the plug body. A contact holding member is placed on the plug body. A crimping tool crimps the contacts in the contact holding member through the plug body into and through the wires to achieve mechanical and electrical connection between the wires and the contacts. A cover may be used to cover the plug body, shield and wires. A crimp ferrule may be used to crimp the wires to the shield.

High speed data plug and method for assembly

A jack capable of handling both Category 6 and Category 7 speed communications. The jack includes a shield, a housing disposed in the shield and a contact block disposed in the housing. The contact block includes a base member and a plurality of contacts carried by the base member. Each contact includes a contact portion effective to touch a corresponding contact of a plug when the plug is inserted into the jack, a first end portion effective to be inserted into a circuit board, and a second end portion. A flexible substrate is connected to the second end portion, the substrate including a compensation circuit for the jack.

The housing defines four distinct chambers for holding at least a first, second third, and fourth contact block, each contact block including at least two contacts. A high performance, high capacitance gain, electric connector for data transfer applications. At least eight sequentially positioned elongate contact members are connected in a series of signal pairs. A first signal pair includes a fourth contact member and a fifth contact member. A second signal pair includes a third contact member and a sixth contact member. In addition, a third signal pair comprises a first contact member and a second contact member. Finally, a seventh and an eighth contact member are in a fourth signal pair. One member of each contact member pair is configured differently from the other member of the pair, the respective contact members being oriented relative to one another such that they substantially remain in generally parallel planes, but define non-parallel paths. Each of the third and fifth contact members mounts a plate-like extension oriented in a first direction and in respective planes generally parallel to one another. Each pair of extensions are separated by a first dielectric such that a first capacitor is formed. Furthermore, each of the fourth and sixth contact members mounts a plate-like extension oriented in a second direction and also in respective planes generally parallel to one another. Each pair of extensions are likewise separated by a second dielectric such that a second capacitor is formed. Each contact of each contact member pair has a plug engaging portion and a board engaging portion, the plurality of contact members having a selected shape, being arranged relative to one another, and being housed collectively by a dielectric casing so as to minimize crosstalk during data transfer.

High performance, high capacitance gain, jack connector for data transmission or the like

An electrical connector assembly adapted to be mounted on a substrate having a ground region including a jack defining a plug-receiving receptacle, at least one contact having a contact portion situated in the receptacle, a shield surrounding at least a portion of the jack and a shorting bar arranged in electrical connection with the contact(s) for discharging static charge from a plug upon its insertion into the receptacle and contact between the plug and the contact(s). The shorting bar is arranged in a channel in an outer housing part of the jack and in engagement with end portions of contacts received in slots in a comb portion of the outer housing part. The shield is adapted to be connected to the ground region of the substrate whereby the shorting bar is electrically connected to the shield. In use, prior to insertion of a mating plug into the receptacle, the end portions of the contacts engage the shorting bar and as the plug is inserted into the receptacle, static charge built up on the cable to which the plug is connected is transmitted through contacts to the shorting bar, from the shorting bar to the shield and from the shield to the ground on the printed circuit board on which the connector assembly is mounted.

A multi-port modular jack including an outer housing part, inner housing parts arranged in the outer housing part to define plug-receiving receptacles receivable of mating plugs, and an optional shield surrounding the jack. The outer housing part having a top wall, a bottom wall and a front face having a mid-portion arranged substantially parallel to and between the top and bottom walls. The front face defines a first row of apertures between the mid-portion and the top wall and a second row of apertures between the mid-portion and the bottom wall. Each aperture in the first row has a plane of symmetry offset in relation to a plane of symmetry of each aperture in the second row such that only a portion of each aperture in the first row is directly opposite the opposed apertures in the second row. Vents are formed in the outer housing part to allow for the passage of air through the jack. The inner housing parts are arranged in the outer housing part to define the plug-receiving receptacles in alignment with a respective aperture in the front face of the outer housing part. Each inner housing part includes contact/terminal members for engaging contacts of a plug insertable into a respective plug-receiving receptacle. The contact/terminal members forming one or more wire pairs may be provided with a double cross over to reduce near-end crosstalk.
