A swing drive system for an excavator is provided which utilizes a prime mover mechanically connected to a first hydraulic pump/motor and a second hydraulic pump/motor mechanically connected to a swing mechanism. The system includes a hydraulic circuit connecting a hydraulic fluid reservoir, a hydraulic accumulator, the first hydraulic pump/motor, and the second hydraulic pump/motor. The system is operable in one mode where the second hydraulic pump/motor acts as a pump to retard movement of the swing mechanism and pressurized hydraulic fluid from the second hydraulic pump/motor is pumped into the hydraulic accumulator. The system is operable in another mode where the pressurized fluid from the hydraulic accumulator is used to assist the prime mover in driving hydraulic consumers, including the swing drive.

Hydraulic hybrid swing drive system for excavators

A swing drive system () for an excavator is provided which utilizes a prime mover () mechanically connected to a first hydraulic pump/motor () and a second hydraulic pump/motor () mechanically connected to a swing mechanism (). A power split transmission includes a rotatable input shaft, a rotatable output shaft, and a planetary gear assembly connected between the input shaft and the output shaft. The transmission also includes a first hydraulic unit operable as a pump or a motor, the first hydraulic unit being coupled to the output shaft via the planetary gear assembly; a second hydraulic unit operable as a pump or a motor, the second hydraulic unit being coupled to the output shaft independently of the planetary gear assembly; and a braking mechanism coupled to the input shaft that is selectively engageable to retard rotation of the input shaft in at least one direction. The braking mechanism enables the power split transmission to use both the first hydraulic unit and the second hydraulic unit to provide enhanced torque at the output shaft without damaging a prime mover coupled to the input shaft.

A hydraulic drive comprising multiple gear motors each having a gear motor output shaft, and a common gear engaged by the output shafts of the multiple gear motors. Each hydraulic motor has a characteristic sinusoidal torque ripple out of phase with the characteristic sinusoidal torque ripple of at least one other hydraulic motor for cancelling torque ripple and thereby reducing the torque ripple at the common gear.
