A diffuse reflectance probe is disclosed which employs in an exemplary embodiment, fiberoptic light transmitting elements and a light pipe for collecting light. The fiberoptic light transmitting elements surround the light pipe and a window having a beveled surface communicates with the light transmitting fiberoptics to direct illuminating radiation in a relatively large field of view in a close working distance with the probe.

Diffuse reflectance probe

A fiber optic mixer is disclosed. A large diameter fiber has a curved radiation input end portion and a straight radiation output end portion. The length of the curved input end portion of the fiber is long enough to cause all entering radiation to hit the reflecting core boundary while the length of the straight output end portion is long enough to provide sufficient internal reflections to mix the radiation entering at the input end to produce a nearly zero correlation between an enterirg ray position and its position as an exiting ray. The fiber optic mixer can be used to efficiently couple radiation from the source or interferometer of a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR) to a multiplicity of optical fibers so that each fiber receives substantially identical spectral, angular and intensity distributions of radiation.

Fiber optic mixer and spectrometer

This invention relates to testing a coin by catching the coin, while it is moving, between a varying radius cam and a pin on a low inertia carrier. The carrier axle is in a fixed relationship to the cam. The coin's momentum plus weight turn the carrier until an end travel point is reached and momentum causes the coin to depart the carrier and go into an accept outlet. Additionally, magnetic fields passing through the coin's path provide further forces on the coin which help pull magnetic coins off the carrier into the reject outlet prior to the end travel point being reached. Undersize or underweight coins leave the carrier early and divert to reject. Oversize coins complete full travel, but cannot pass through to the accept outlet, and move back to reject outlet. Also, stringing of acceptable coins for retrieval is defeated by a trip in the accept outlet. Blockage of the reject outlet is defeated by a lever to stop rotation of the carrier in conjunction with a pin on the carrier to block spillover coins. By varying the proportions of the carrier and cam, the acceptor can operate with various preselected coins.
