An economical ground heat exchanger system uses water-filled membrane liners in cylindrical augured holes. A submersible pump in a drain reservoir is shared by multiple boreholes. Thermal connection with a building or industrial process occurs through a heat exchanger thermally coupled to the reservoir. The pump sends water tempered by the heat exchanger to the water-filled holes, where it exchanges heat with the ground before overflowing through gravity drain piping back to the reservoir for continued recirculation. Heat transfer with the ground occurs through thermal contact between the water, the membrane liners, and earth supporting the liners. Optional raised borehole support rims maintain an 'above grade' water level and allow removed soil to be re-used as a berm or planter over manifold pipes that connect the system components, thus eliminating the cost of trenching for the manifold pipes.

Ground heat-exchange system with water-filled boreholes

In a split system heat pump cooling and heating system, an auxiliary hot water storage tank is provided as an energy storage bank. Two sets of coils run through this storage tank, a first set carrying hot refrigerant from the heat pump to deposit energy and a second set carrying hot potable water to remove energy. Valve and switch matrixes are operated at the heat pump to provide hot potable water from the energy storage bank during both normal space heating and cooling operations of the heat pump.

Providing domestic hot water from conventional residential split system heat pumps

A frame for an evaporative cooler includes a bottom channel including a bottom panel and two bottom-side panels, a top channel including a top panel and two top-side panels, and a pair of side channels disposed between, and engaged with, each of the bottom channel and the top channel. The side channels may include a vertical side panel, a flanged bottom, a flanged top, and a pair of flanged sides, where the flanged bottom is engaged with the bottom panel, the flanged top is engaged with the top panel, and each of the pair of flanged sides is engaged with a bottom-side panel of the bottom channel and a top-side panel of the top channel.

A method of forming an insulated concrete foundation is provided comprising constructing a foundation frame, the frame comprising an insulating form having an opening, inserting a pocket former into the opening; placing concrete inside the foundation frame; and removing the pocket former after the placed concrete has set, wherein the concrete forms a pocket in the placed concrete that is accessible through the opening. The method may further comprise sealing the opening by placing a sealing plug or sealing material in the opening. A system for forming an insulated concrete foundation is provided comprising a plurality of interconnected insulating forms, the insulating forms having a rigid outer member protecting and encasing an insulating material, and at least one gripping lip extending outwardly from the outer member to provide a pest barrier. At least one insulating form has an opening into which a removable pocket former is inserted. The system may also provide a tension anchor positioned in the pocket former and a tendon connected to the tension anchor.

Slab edge insulating form system and methods

A roof top cooling unit has an evaporative cooling section that includes at least one evaporative module that pre-cools ventilation air and water; a condenser; a water reservoir and pump that captures and re-circulates water within the evaporative modules; a fan that exhausts air from the building and the evaporative modules and systems that refill and drain the water reservoir. The cooling unit also has a refrigerant section that includes a compressor, an expansion device, evaporator and condenser heat exchangers, and connecting refrigerant piping. Supply air components include a blower, an air filter, a cooling and/or heating coil to condition air for supply to the building, and optional dampers that, in designs that supply less than 100% outdoor air to the building, control the mixture of return and ventilation air.

Hydronic rooftop cooling systems

A two stage indirect evaporative cooler that moves air from a blower mounted above the unit, vertically downward into dry air passages in an indirect stage and turns the air flow horizontally before leaving the indirect stage. After leaving the dry passages, a major air portion travels into the direct stage and the remainder of the air is induced by a pressure drop in the direct stage to turn 180&#xb0; and returns horizontally through wet passages in the indirect stage and out of the unit as exhaust air.

Two stage indirect evaporative cooling system

An evaporative heat exchanger having parallel plates that define alternating dry and wet passages. A water reservoir is located below the plates and is connected to a water distribution system. Water from the water distribution system flows through the wet passages and wets the surfaces of the plates that form the wet passages. Air flows through the dry passages, mixes with air below the plates, and flows into the wet passages before exiting through the top of the wet passages.

Vertical counterflow evaporative cooler

A solar water heater has a rotationally-molded water box and a glazing subassembly disposed over the water box that enhances solar gain and provides an insulating air space between the outside environment and the water box. When used with a pressurized water system, an internal heat exchanger is integrally molded within the water box. Mounting and connection hardware is included to provide a rapid and secure method of installation.

Molded polymer solar water heater

A dual evaporative pre-cooling system is installed packaged air conditioning units. The dual evaporative pre-cooling system includes an evaporative media disposed in a housing through which incoming condenser air flows. A water distribution device is disposed above the evaporative media. A sump and a pump are located below the evaporative media to recirculate water through the water distribution device and a ventilation air pre-cooling coil. A plurality of pipes connect, and allow circulation of, a water source discharged from the pump through the ventilation air pre-cooling coil, and to the water distribution device.

Dual evaporative pre-cooling system and method therefor

An indirect/direct evaporative cooling system for cooling air for comfort purposes includes a single, variable speed blower positioned below an indirect evaporative cooling stage and a direct evaporative cooling stage. A first portion of the blower discharge is directed horizontally through the indirect evaporative cooling stage, where it is cooled without the addition of moisture thereto, and is then further cooled in the direct evaporative stage prior to being supplied to a building. A second portion of the blower discharge is directed vertically through the indirect evaporative cooling stage and serves to cool the first portion as the first portion travels through the indirect stage. The indirect and direct cooling stages share a common sump for collecting water drained therefrom. The indirect stage includes a drip edge to keep drain water out of the flow of the first portion. A stud-straddle supply duct is attached to the direct cooling stage to facilitate installation of the system in wood-framed walls.

Indirect and direct evaporative cooling system

An underfloor cooling system for cooling a building structure has tubing located in or under a massive floor of the structure for circulating water through the system. The water is directed through a cooling means connected to the tubing to cool the water. The cool water is then returned to the tubing to cool the massive floor and passively cool the structure. The cooling means may be a direct evaporative cooler or an evaporative radiative roof spray system. The cooling means may be located outdoors. The system may additionally include active cooling delivery such as at least one fan coil or at least one hydronic panel, through which cool water from the underfloor tubing is circulated to provide cool air to the structure.

Night-storage underfloor cooling systems

A combined refrigerator-water heating system providing one or more insulated food storage compartments, includes an insulated water storage compartment, a refrigeration system including a compressor, an evaporation heat exchanger configured to cool the food storage compartment(s), a condenser configured to heat the water storage compartment, a flow restriction/expansion device, piping connecting the compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporation in a series flow loop, a resistance electric heating element configured to heat the water storage compartment, and a control means to activate the compressor in response to cooling demand from the food storage compartment, and to activate the electric heating element in response to either heating demand from the water storage compartment or a time-of-day signal to bias resistance electric water heating operation toward times of off-peak electric use.

Combined refrigerator water heater

A roofing system for a structure having a roof deck with upstanding edges about the perimeter of the roof deck, includes a waterproof membrane on the roof deck and extending from edge-to-edge. A reservoir is defined by the waterproof membrane and edges and may contain a liquid therein, but some embodiments may operate without the reservoir. At least one insulating panel is provided above the liquid reservoir and covers the waterproof membrane on the roof deck from edge-to-edge. A pump has an inlet within the reservoir and an outlet communicating with the surrounding environment for selectively spraying liquid from the reservoir or other source onto the external surface of the panel to cool the liquid in the reservoir. Drains in the panel provide communications between the external surface of the panel and the reservoir for permitting drainage of liquid on the external surface into the reservoir. An overflow drain established a maximum depth of the reservoir, and is located below the external surface of the panel so as not to be clogged by debris. An edge cushion between the edge and the insulation panel is resilient for accommodating reciprocal movement of the panel toward and away from the edge. The roof membrane continuously extends from the roof deck and surrounds an exterior face to the edge cushion extending between the panel and the edge to define the liquid reservoir and seal the roof deck against leakage.

Energy-saving protected roof systems

A modular temperature controlling panel for location adjacent a rear side of a room surface and between spaced penetrable structural framing members for supporting the room surface includes: an insulating core having a contact surface for location adjacent the room surface and a non-contact surface opposite the room surface; a linear thermal source recessed within the core on the contact surface; a metallic sheet on the contact surface of the core for contacting the linear thermal source; and a spring retention device on the non-contact surface of the core for securing the core between the spaced framing members and for urging the contact surface towards the room surface. The spring retention device is rotatable about a rotation axis perpendicular to the framing members between a loaded position for confining the spring retention device within the core and a secured position for biasing the spring retention device to penetrate the spaced framing members and urge the contact face of the core towards the room surface.
