A system and method for detecting energetic particles include a detector onto which the particles are impinged. An output signal from the detector, indicative of the energy of the particles, is directed by an AC-coupler to a measurement device to determine particle characteristics such as mass and/or abundance. The detector is selectively couplable to positive or negative bias voltages, and in one embodiment is differentially biased to eliminate ringing due common-mode excitation. The AC-coupler has capacitively-coupled input and output terminals that are embedded in a transmission line structure including capacitances that in some embodiments serve as the sole energy storage component in order to reduce the effects of parasitic inductance found in conventional detection circuits. In some embodiments, a pulse compensation network is provided, to reduce undershoot and ringing due to remote installation of the AC-coupler caused by reflection of low frequency components blocked by the AC-coupler.

According to one embodiment, an active cable assembly may include a cable end, a data receiver, a controller characteristic circuit, and a controller. The data receiver, operable to receive a DC-balanced data signal, can be electrically coupled to a conductive input data line of the cable end. The controller characteristic circuit can be electrically coupled to the conductive input data line. The controller can be communicatively coupled to the data receiver. The controller may include a configurable communication port electrically coupled to the controller characteristic circuit, and memory for storing a boot loader. The controller can execute the boot loader to set the configurable communication port as an output for controller data signals and as an input for the controller data signals.

High-data-rate interconnect cables are disclosed, wherein electrical data signals are transmitted in a conductor assembly made of a thin metal layer surrounding a cylindrical support member. The cylindrical support member can be a high-resistivity conductor or a dielectric, such as a glass optical waveguide that supports the transmission of optical signals. The cylindrical support member can also be a core conductor that supports the transmission of electrical power and low-frequency auxiliary signals. The high-data-rate interconnect cables are self-equalizing, so that a data link transmission system that employs the high-data-rate interconnect cable does not require active equalization.

Methods, circuits and active optical cable assemblies for simultaneous transmission of low-speed optical data and high-speed optical data over an optical fiber link are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of optical communication includes controlling a laser such that an output of the laser transmits high-speed optical data at a first bit rate, and modulating an amplitude of the output of the laser such that the laser transmits low-speed optical data at a second bit rate simultaneously with the high-speed optical data. In another embodiment, a circuit for providing optical communication includes a laser and a laser driver circuit that digitally modulates an output of the laser to transmit high-speed optical data at a first bit rate. The circuit further includes an amplitude modulation circuit that modulates an amplitude of the laser to transmit low-speed optical data at a second bit rate simultaneously with the high-speed optical data.

Methods, circuits and optical cable assemblies for optical transmission of high-speed data and low-speed data

Optical engines and optical cable assemblies incorporating optical engines providing duty cycle correction on multiplexed low-speed signals are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical engine includes a low-speed Tx line, a low-speed Rx line, an optical transceiver device, and a control circuit. A low-speed Tx signal is transmitted on the low-speed Tx line and a low-speed Rx signal is received on the low-speed Rx line. The optical transceiver device further includes a laser control pin operable to control a laser configured to provide light on an optical Tx lane, and an optical detect pin operable to provide an indication as to light detected at an optical Rx lane. A Tx signal conditioning circuit configured to condition the low-speed Tx signal is coupled to the laser control pin, and/or a Rx signal conditioning circuit configured to condition the low-speed Rx signal is coupled to the optical detect pin.

Optical engines and optical cable assemblies having electrical signal conditioning

Embodiments disclosed herein include receiver optical assemblies (ROAs) having a photo-detector remotely located from a differential transimpedance amplifier (TIA). Related components, circuits, and methods are also disclosed. By providing the photo-detector remotely located from a TIA, additional costs associated with design constraints of providing the photo-detector intimate with a TIA may be avoided, thereby reducing cost of the ROA. In this regard as a non-limiting example, the ROAs according to the embodiments disclosed herein allow shorter haul active optical cable applications for use in consumer applications from a cost standpoint with the added benefits of increased bandwidth and low noise performance of optical fiber. In this regard, the ROAs disclosed herein provide higher input impedance differential TIA circuits and transmission circuits inhibiting or reducing ringing effects and maintain a sufficiently low resistance-capacitance (RC) time constant for differential TIA circuit to allow for higher bandwidth operation of the ROA.

Receiver optical assemblies (ROAs) having photo-detector remotely located from transimpedance amplifier, and related components, circuits, and methods

Optical engines and optical cable assemblies incorporating optical engines capable of transmitting low-speed and high-speed signals over the same optical fibers are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical engine includes a low-speed transmit (Tx) line, a low-speed receive (Rx) line, a high-speed data lane, an optical transceiver device, and a control circuit. The high-speed data lane includes a high-speed Tx lane and a high-speed Rx lane. A high-speed signal present on the high-speed Tx lane is converted to a high-speed optical signal at an optical Tx lane, and a high-speed optical signal received at an optical Rx lane is converted to a high-speed signal that is provided to the high-speed Rx lane. The control circuit selectively routes the low-speed Tx signal at the low-speed Tx line directly to the optical transceiver device in real time, and also routes a low-speed Rx signal from the transceiver to the low-speed Rx line.

Optical engines and optical cable assemblies capable of low-speed and high-speed optical communication

An optical touch screen that utilizes a planar transparent sheet and that is configured to determine the position of a touch event on the transparent sheet is disclosed. Light-source elements and light-sensing elements are operably disposed at a perimeter of the transparent sheet. Light is detected over lines-of-sight between the light-source elements and the light-sensing elements. Attenuated lines-of-sight due to the touch event are determined. Central lines are established based on the attenuated lines-of-sight. The locations of central-line intersections are then established. The average of the locations of the central-line intersections is then used to establish the location of the touch event.

Optical touch-screen systems and methods using a planar transparent sheet

An optical touch screen that utilizes a planar transparent sheet and that is configured to determine the position of a touch event on the transparent sheet is disclosed. Light-source elements and light-sensing elements are operably disposed at the transparent sheet perimeter. Light is detected over lines-of-sight between the light-source elements and the light-sensing elements. Attenuated lines-of-sight due to a touch event are determined. Polygons are established by overlapping triangles defined by the limiting lines of sight for each light-sensing element. Polygons with attenuations below the attenuation threshold are eliminated. The centers of the remaining polygons are then determined to establish the locations of the touch events. The systems and methods provide robust detection of multiple touch events.

Robust optical touch&#x2014;screen systems and methods using a planar transparent sheet

Active optical cable assemblies, and systems, methods, and adapter modules and integrated circuits for facilitating communication between a host and a client device over a fiber optic cable are disclosed. In one embodiment, an active optical cable assembly includes a fiber optic cable having at least one optical fiber, a host active circuit, a client active circuit, a host connector, and a client connector. Upon a connection between the host active circuit and a host device, the client termination switch closes to couple the client termination impedance to the ground reference potential. Upon a connection between the client active circuit and a client device, the host termination switch closes to the couple the host termination impedance to the ground reference potential. In another embodiment, a method includes enabling a host termination impedance upon a connection of an active optical cable to a client device.

The present invention provides a multi-phase sampling system in which each sampler samples a transition and data of an incoming data signal. By enabling each sampler to sample a transition in addition to data of the incoming data signal, phase errors associated with each of the samplers can be determined. The phase error determinations provide valuable information that can be used 1) to correct the phase errors of the system sampling the incoming data signal, 2) to correct the phase errors of a multi-phase system that is transmitting the incoming data signal, and/or 3) to correct the phase errors of both a multi-phase system that is sampling an incoming data signal and of a multi-phase system that is transmitting the data signal.

Blocks of input data are received. The input data comprises packets of information words. The packets are preceded and followed by control words. A master transition is appended to the beginning of each block to form a respective frame for transmission. The master transition has a sense that depends on whether the block contains any control words. Additionally, for each block that contains one or more control words, a TYPE word indicating a structural property of the block is generated, the block is condensed to accommodate the TYPE word, and the TYPE word is inserted into the block. The coding method provides a very low overhead (3.125%) when implemented as a 64b/66b code.

The network monitoring system comprises a network router with built-in monitoring data gathering. The network router includes channels through which data pass in packets. Each of the packets includes a packet header. The network router additionally includes a header copier and a packet generator. The header copier generates a header copy from the packet header of at least some of the packets. The packet generator receives the header copies and forms monitoring data packets from them. Each monitoring data packet additionally represents temporal data relating to the header copies included in it. A method of obtaining performance data relating to a data transmission network that includes a node passes data through the node in packets. Each of the packets includes a packet header. At least some of the packet headers are copied to obtain respective header copies as monitoring data from which monitoring data packets are formed. The monitoring data packets additionally represent temporal data relating to the header copies included in them. The monitoring data packets are transmitted and the performance data are generated from the monitoring data contained in the monitoring data packets.
