Systems and methods for peak power limit control in heterogenous computing platforms are described. In an illustrative, non-limiting embodiment, an Information Handling System (IHS) may include a heterogeneous computing platform having a plurality of devices and a memory coupled to the heterogeneous computing platform, where the memory comprises firmware instructions that, upon execution by at least one of the plurality of devices, causes the at least one device to operate as an orchestrator configured to: in response to a determination that a current power level used by a selected device exceeds a peak power limit, restrict an amount of power used by the selected device; in response to detection of a peripheral device coupled to the IHS, reduce the peak power limit; and in response to a determination that the current power level exceeds the reduced peak power limit, further restrict the amount of power used by the selected device.

Peak power limit control in heterogeneous computing platforms

Systems and methods manage use of rechargeable battery power of Information Handling Systems (IHSs). In managing power draws from the batteries of an IHS, use of software applications of the IHS is monitored and use is detected of a software application that has been designated as prioritized for use of the IHS batteries. A power throttling factor is selected for use in drawing power from the rechargeable batteries of the IHS while the prioritized software application remains in use. The selected power throttling factor is transmitted to an embedded controller of the IHS and the embedded controller is notified when the prioritized software application is no longer in use by a user of the IHS. The embedded controller receives the power throttling factor and, while the prioritized software application remains in use, the embedded controller limits power drawn from the IHS rechargeable batteries according to the power throttling factor.

Systems and methods for managing use of portable IHS batteries

Automatically updating a full charge capacity (FCC) of a battery of an information handling system, the method including: determining that the SOC of the battery is less than the SOC threshold; determining that the time since the previous update of the FCC of the battery is greater than the time threshold; identifying configuration parameters for an update of the FCC of the battery; comparing the configuration parameters with current conditions of the battery; based on comparing the configuration parameters with current conditions of the battery, determining that the current conditions of the battery are within bounds of the configuration parameters; and in response to determining that the current conditions of the battery are within the bounds of the configuration parameters, updating the FCC of the battery.

Automatically updating a full charge capacity of a battery of an information handling system

A disclosed information handling system is coupled to a power adapter that is coupled to an AC line power source. The system includes an embedded controller storing instructions executable to determine that a trigger condition for limiting electrical power drawn by the system from the power adapter is met and, in response to the determination and in accordance with a low power operating mode, to limit electrical power drawn from the power adapter by the system to an amount less than or equal to the lesser of a power rating of the power adapter and a capacity of the AC line power source to supply electrical power. Limiting the electrical power drawn from the power adapter may include limiting the electrical power consumed by operation of the system or limiting a rate at which an internal battery of the system is charged by electrical power supplied by the power adapter.

Optimization of low power states while AC line power availability is limited

Embodiments of information handling systems (IHSs) having rechargeable batteries and improved battery charge control methods are provided herein. For example, a method is disclosed for dynamically switching between a plurality of battery charging profiles, each having different recharge thresholds and charge termination thresholds for controlling battery recharge. Such a method may include detecting discharge current from a rechargeable battery of an IHS, determining whether or not the IHS is coupled to an external power source, and switching from using a first battery charging profile to using a second battery charging profile to recharge the rechargeable battery in response to detecting the discharge current while the IHS is coupled to the external power source and/or determining that the discharge current is a short term supplemental power event.

Information handling systems and improved battery charge control methods

In one or more embodiments, one or more systems, one or more methods, and/or one or more processes may determine a historical discharge rate (d) from multiple discharge rates a battery of an information handling system (IHS) while the IHS operates on electrical power provided by the battery; receive a current discharge rate (d) of the battery; determine a full charge capacity correction factor value (C) associated with the battery; determine a weighting factor (&#x3b1;); determine a difference between a full charge capacity value (FCC) and C; determine &#x3b1;&#xb7;d; determine (1&#x2212;&#x3b1;)&#xb7;d; determine a sum of d&#xb7;&#x3b1; and d&#xb7;&#x3b1;; determine a quotient value of FCC&#x2212;Cand &#x3b1;&#xb7;d+(1&#x2212;&#x3b1;)&#xb7;d; scale the quotient value based at least on a relative state of charge of the battery to determine an estimated time remaining for the IHS to operate on the electrical power provided by the battery; and display the estimated time remaining.

System and method of estimating time remaining for an information handling system to operate on electrical power provided by one or more batteries

In one or more embodiments, one or more systems, one or more methods, and/or one or more processes: may determine that a rechargeable cell of multiple rechargeable cells has reached a top of charge voltage value; in response to determining that the rechargeable cell has reached the top of charge voltage value, may provide an electrical charge current, associated with a charge current value, to the rechargeable cell; may determine a temperature value associated with the rechargeable cell; may determine a charge current termination value based at least on the temperature value; while the charge current value is not at and is not below the charge current termination value: may determine the temperature value associated with the rechargeable cell; and may determine the charge current termination value based at least on the temperature value; and may cease providing the electrical charge current to the rechargeable cell.

System and method of charging a rechargeable battery

System and method for battery runtime forecasting, including identifying a power usage of a IHS; identifying a charge profile of a battery of the IHS, the charge profile including charging levels each associated with a respective time period; determining a state of charge of the battery based on a current time; identifying power delivery capabilities of a power source providing power to the battery; generating a predicted relative state of charge (RSOC) profile of the battery based on i) the power usage of the IHS, ii) an entirety of the charge profile of the battery, iii) the state of charge of the battery, and iv) power delivery capabilities of the power source; and identifying a runtime estimate of the battery.

Battery runtime forecasting for an information handling system

Systems and methods are provided for powering an Information Handling System (IHS). The system includes a multimode AC adapter that reports supported outputs, including USB-PD (Universal Serial Bus Power Delivery) outputs and also including high-power outputs of a voltage greater than the USB-PD output voltages. The IHS detects a coupling of the multimode AC adapter to a USB-C port of the IHS. Based on information provided by the multimode adapter, the IHS determines the multimode adapter supports transmission of the high-power outputs to the USB-C port. The high-power outputs are negotiated and a power circuit of the IHS is configured for converting the negotiated high-power output. The configured power circuit converts the negotiated high-power output received via the USB-C port to an input utilized by the IHS. The high-power conversion circuit may provide efficient conversion of input voltages of up to 60 volts to voltages for use by the IHS.

Multimode USB-C power transmission and conversion

An user profile may be used to adjust one or more system power management settings of an information handling system. An information handling system may transmit one or more user profile credentials. The information handling system may receive user profile data and may compare the user profile data with one or more system characteristics of the information handling system. Based on the comparison of the user profile data with the system characteristics of the information handling system, the information handling system may adjust one or more power management settings of the information handling system.

Portable power management profile for an information handling system

A variable power bus (VPB) cable, such as a USB Type-C cable, is validated for actual current capacity with respect to a specified power rating for the cable. The power cable validation is performed when the cable is connected to a power storage adapter and a portable information handling system. The validation includes, prior to negotiating a power delivery contract for electrical power to be supplied to the information handling system from the VPB port via the VPB cable, applying a first voltage to the VPB cable to identify a first indication of a current capacity of the VPB cable; and when the first indication confirms that the current capacity of the VPB cable corresponds to a specified power rating for the VPB cable, enabling the power delivery contract to be negotiated according to the specified power rating, otherwise blocking the power delivery contract using the VPB cable.

Power storage adapter with power cable validation

Systems and methods provide wireless power to an Information Handling System (IHS). A multimode wireless power transmission unit supports USB-PD (Universal Serial Bus Power Delivery) power transmissions and also supports a high-power transmission of a voltage greater than USB-PD transmission voltages. The IHS detects the wireless coupling of the wireless power transmission unit. As part of this coupling, the IHS determines whether the wireless power transmission unit supports high-power transmissions. A wireless power transfer is negotiated and a power circuit of the IHS is configured for converting the negotiated high-power transmission to an input utilized by the IHS. Embodiments utilize a power circuit that provides efficient conversion of power transmissions of up to 60 volts. This same power circuit also provides efficient conversion of power transmissions of up to 60 volts by a multimode USB-C power adapter.

High-power wireless transmission and conversion

Systems and methods that may be implemented to employ a programmable integrated circuit within a smart battery pack to detect and/or log occurrence of chassis intrusion and/or tampering events in a battery-powered information handling system within which the smart battery pack is installed. A battery management unit (BMU) or other programmable integrated circuit of the installed smart battery pack may be utilized to detect occurrence of a tampering and/or intrusion event into the chassis of the host information handling system based on a current state of a system present (Sys_Pres) signal at the battery pack that indicates temporary or permanent disconnection of system motherboard circuitry from the smart battery pack of the battery-powered information handling system. Such a detected occurrence of a tampering and/or intrusion event may be reported to a remote human user of remote system and/or to a local human user of the local system.

Systems and methods for detecting chassis intrusion and/or tampering events in battery-powered information handling systems

Systems and methods are provided for adaptively powering an Information Handling System (IHS) using a multimode AC adapter. Information reported by the multimode adapter is utilized to determine whether it supports USB-PD power transmissions and also supports high-power transmissions. The power demand of the IHS is monitored. When the power demand is greater than the USB-PD power levels, the multimode adapter is configured for providing a high-power transmission and a power circuit of the IHS is configured for converting the high-power transmission to a voltage used by the IHS. When the power demand is not greater than the USB-PD power levels, the multimode adapter is configured for providing a USB-PD transmission. Some embodiments may detect events associated with high power demand and may preemptively configure the power circuit of the IHS for providing high-power outputs upon detecting such events.

Adaptive multimode USB-C power transmission and conversion

The measured capacity of a rechargeable battery provides the full charge capacity of the battery, but does not reflect degradation of the battery capacity between measurements. Embodiments initiate a first measurement of a rechargeable battery capacity. Parameters of use of the rechargeable battery are monitored, such as the depth and number of discharge cycles of the battery. Until a second capacity measurement is initiated, a battery capacity correction factor is generated based on the monitored parameters of the use of the rechargeable battery. During this interval until the second measurement, a remaining available capacity of the rechargeable battery is reported based on an adjustment of the first capacity measurement using the generated correction factor. The correction factor for a particular battery may be based on learned battery degradation for a large number of batteries and also based on events and conditions of use of that particular battery.
