A device for direct or indirect application of liquid or viscous coating medium by way of an application system onto a material web, especially a paper or cardboard web, including a weakening device for weakening the boundary layer of air that is carried along by the application surface. The weakening device is located prior to the applicator device viewed in direction of travel of the application surface. The weakening device includes a blowing device and a suction device. The blowing device is located prior to the applicator device when viewed in direction of travel of the application surface and produces an air flow in opposite direction to the direction of travel. The suction device is located prior to the blowing device when viewed in direction of travel of the application surface and sucks off at least a portion of the air flow that is produced by the blowing device, as well as at least a portion of the boundary layer of air that is carried along by the application surface.

Application device

A coating machine serves to directly or indirectly apply a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving surface. A coater imbedded in a coater bed, defines in part the metering slot. A limiting surface at the moving surface inlet of the coater bed forms, together with the moving surface, an accumulator chamber, with the opening facing in the opposite direction with respect to the feed direction. The accumulator chamber gradually reduces its volume, and the coating medium, delivered to the accumulator chamber by the moving surface, accumulates in the area ahead of the metering slot. It further includes pneumatic pressure device to alter the relative position of the limiting surface with respect to the moving surface and thus alter the geometry of the accumulator chamber.

Machine for direct or indirect application of a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving surface

A coating machine for directly or indirectly applying a coating to a material web is designed to apply liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving surface. The coating machine includes a discharge nozzle for discharging a coating medium onto the moving surface. The discharge nozzle has a first nozzle lip residing on the feed-side, and a second nozzle lip residing on the trailing side with respect to the moving surface. At least one of the first and second nozzle lips is composed of a blade element.

Method and apparatus for directly or indirectly applying a liquid or pasty application medium to one or both sides of a continuous surface

An applicator for one of direct and indirect application of a coating medium onto a traveling fiber material web includes at least one dosing device and a coating edge delimiting device. The at least one dosing device includes a pair of lips with each lip having a free end adjacent the fiber material web and extending transverse to a direction of travel of the fiber material web. Further, the lips define a dosing slot therebetween. The dosing slot is an open-jet nozzle and has two side edges. The coating edge delimiting device includes at least two coating edge delimiting elements fitted between and in direct contact with each of the lips. The coating edge delimiting elements close off and substantially seal the dosing slot on the side edges, thereby substantially sealing the dosing slot. Each coating edge delimiting element has a wall section extending beyond the free ends of the lips in a flow direction of the coating medium through the dosing slot.

Applicator for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a traveling material web

An apparatus for application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a substrate moving past it, for instance a material web of paper, cardboard or boxboard or an applicator roll, includes a back-up chamber which is bounded on its substrate entrance end by a back-up chamber entrance bounding element and on its substrate exit end by a back-up chamber exit bounding element. The apparatus also includes a feed device for feeding the coating medium. In the applicator according to the invention for achieving a uniform coating application, the feed device, viewed in the direction of travel of the substrate, is arranged before the back-up chamber entrance bounding element.

Apparatus and method for application of a liquid or pasty medium onto a passing substrate

An apparatus for applying liquid of a pasty application medium to a moving web includes a curtain applicator unit, which discharges the application medium onto the web as a curtain or veil which moves substantially under the force of gravity, and a device which at least prevents complete coverage of at least one of the edge strips of the web over a predetermined width. According to the invention, this device deflects the at least one edge strip out of the plane of the web, at least in the area of the curtain applicator unit.

An apparatus for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a traveling material web, notably of paper or cardboard, includes at least one oblong working unit wetted by the coating medium and an oblong support element carrying the working unit. The at least one working unit and the support element are thermally shielded from one another. Method of applying a coating medium on a traveling fiber material web

A device designed for coating a material web with a coating medium includes a coater, a metering/smoothing device positioned downstream of the coater in the direction of feed of the material web, at a certain distance from the coater, and a support roll around which the material web is guided. Moreover, the material web is guided around the support roll only in the area of the metering/smoothing device, and it traverses essentially in a straight line between the coater and the support roll. In accordance to a first aspect of this invention, a support arrangement supports the material web in the straight web section between the coater and the support roll. In accordance to a second aspect of this invention, devices are provided which stabilize the material web in the area where the web traverses in a straight line.

Device for the direct or indirect application of a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving material web

An apparatus applies a coating medium onto a coating area of a moving substrate. In the case of direct application, the coating medium is applied onto the outer surface of a material web such as paper or carton, or, in the case of indirect application, the coating medium is applied onto the outer surface of a transfer element such as a transfer roll, which transfers the coating medium onto the material web. The coating mechanism is provided with at least one opening for the discharge of coating medium onto the substrate. A panel element is positioned on at least one side of the two margins of the coating area a certain distance after the opening of the discharge element relative to the direction of discharge of the coating medium in order to prevent any deposits of the coating medium outside of the coating area, which thus defines the respective margins of the coating area.

Apparatus and process for applying liquid or viscid coating medium onto a coating area of a moving substrate

A support bar unit for supporting at least one functional device in a machine for the production and/or the processing of a fiber material web includes a first partial support beam and a second partial support beam. The first partial support beam supports the functional device, while the first partial support beam is supported on the second partial support beam. An assembly having at least three coaters or separate doctor or blade units, all arranged at a single backing roll coating station is provided. At least two of the coater or blade units can be movably positioned for easy operation and servicing of all three units. Additionally, one or more of the coater units may have doctors or blades, and the coater units with blades or blade unit may each be angularly positioned through a range of blade angles to optimize coating operations.
