The invention provide a method for making silicone hydrogel based on the Lightstream Technology from a monomer mixture with a curing time of less than about 100 seconds. The present invention is also related to silicone hydrogel contact lenses made according to methods of the invention.

Method for making silicone hydrogel contact lenses

The invention provides a class of actinically-crosslinkable silicone-containing prepolymers which comprise (1) ethylenically-unsaturated groups and (2) UV-absorbing polymeric units, latent UV-absorbing polymeric units, and/or dual photo-functional polymeric units. The prepolymer of the invention can be used to prepare silicone hydrogel contact lenses capable of absorbing UV/visible radiation. The present invention is also related to silicone hydrogel contact lenses made from a prepolymer of the invention and methods for making the contact lenses in a cost-effective way and with high consistency and high fidelity to the original lens design.

Prepolymers suitable for making ultra-violet absorbing contact lenses

Described herein are tri-functional compounds useful in the production of ophthalmic lenses. The compounds are composed of UV absorber having a polymerization initiator directly or indirectly bonded to the ultraviolet absorber, and an olefinic group directly or indirectly bonded to the ultraviolet absorber. Also described herein are polymers and ophthalmic lenses produced from the tri-functional compounds described herein.

The invention relates to ophthalmic molding formulations and to tinted, high Dk ophthalmic moldings. This invention also relates to a method for making a tinted ophthalmic molding. The method comprises: (a) providing a polymer precursor having cross-linkable or polymerizable groups; (b) providing a pigment dispersion comprising an inorganic or organic pigment and a dispersing agent; (c) mixing the pigment dispersion with the polymer precursor to form a tinted prepolymer mixture; (d) dispensing the tinted prepolymer mixture into a mold; and (e) forming a tinted ophthalmic molding from the tinted prepolymer mixture, the molding comprising a polymer matrix having the pigment entrapped therein. With this method, tinted ophthalmic moldings, particularly edge-to-edge soft, tinted contact lenses having improved properties, are prepared with an improved efficiency.

A method of tinting an unhydrated contact lens involves the steps of providing an unhydrated contact lens; providing a dyestuff solution; providing a printing block comprising a hydrophilic polymer material containing a dye complexing agent capable of noncovalently bonding the dyestuff; placing the dyestuff solution onto the printing block; contacting the unhydrated contact lens and the printing block for a time sufficient to allow the dyestuff solution to diffuse to the lens; and removing the lens from the printing block.
