An apparatus for the applying of refractory material in 360 degrees while the apparatus is raised or lowered vertically or inserted and retracted horizontally can apply a layer of material continuously on the interior surface of a hot vessel. Wet mixed refractory material is supplied to an applicator and pressurized air is supplied to the applicator so as to rotate a spinner head on the applicator. The apparatus includes a shroud around the housing of the applicator which conveys the pressurized air around the housing to cool the housing below the temperature of the vessel. Also described is a method of applying refractory material by a spinner head on the applicator in the form of a spray to hot metallurgical vessels such as the snorkel tubes of vacuum degassers and ladles.

An improved apparatus for the gunning of a material is provided having a nozzle with an inner passage defined by an inner tubular member having an inlet end into which a wetted material is to be introduced and an outlet end from which the material is to be sprayed. An outer tubular member is disposed around the inner tubular member defining an outer passage between the inner and outer tubular members. A compressed gas is passed through the outer passage and impinged on the wetted material exiting the inner passage to better control the spray pattern of the wetted material. The inner tubular member extends out beyond the outlet end of the outer tubular member and the inner surface of the outer tubular member and the outer surface of the inner tubular member near the outlet end are chamfered to provide an optimal attitude for the impinging air.

Calcium carbonate and titanium tetraisopropoxide are used as starting materials. The process utilizes a hydrothermal reaction step. Hydrates having both hexagonal form, wherein the particles have a platy morphology, and lath form, wherein the particles have a rodlike morphology are produceable according to the process. Particle morphology is determined by the choice of process parameters, especially the rate of heating during the hydrothermal reaction step. Kassite particles of the hexagonal plate form, which are useful as a high opacity paper coating pigment, are produced when the rate of heating is less than or equal to 1.5.degree.C./min. Faster rates of heating result in kassite particles of a lath form. These particles are useful as a reinforcing material in polymers and ceramics.
