A vascular occlusion device for use with a hydraulic deployment catheter is provided. The vascular occlusion device includes a headpiece that has a deformable interference element which changes from an initial configuration to a deformed configuration upon an increase of hydraulic pressure within the deployment catheter. When the interference element is in the initial configuration, the headpiece is secured to the deployment catheter, and when the interference element is in the deformed configuration, the headpiece can be removed from the deployment catheter for deployment of the occlusion device.

The present invention relates to a medical device for placement at a predetermined location within a passageway of the human body, and more particularly, relates to a flexible embolization device which may be delivered by a catheter to a pre-selected position within a blood vessel to thereby embolize a blood vessel or a blood vessel defect, such as an aneurysm or fistula. Specifically, the embolization device comprises an elongated coil having a lumen, the coil and lumen being at least partially embedded in an elongated foam member comprising, in some embodiments, a flexible, biodegradable, water insoluble, open, interconnecting-cell foam material having embolic characteristics, and capable of allowing cell proliferation into the open cell foam interior.

A vasoocclusive embolic delivery system for use in placement of an embolic coil at a treatment site within a vessel. The embolic coil includes an elongated stretch resistant fiber having its distal end bonded to the distal end of the embolic coil. The stretch resistant fiber extends through a central lumen of the coil and extends beyond the proximal end of the coil. Also included is a generally cylindrical stabilization bead, having a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the central lumen of the coil, mounted on the stretch resistant fiber within the lumen of the embolic coil. The stabilization bead serves to keep the stretch resistant fiber centered within the lumen of the embolic coil. Additionally, a headpiece is mounted on the proximal end of the stretch resistant fiber and serves to couple the embolic coil to the delivery system.

A vasoocclusive embolic device deployment system for use in the placement of an embolic coil at a treatment site within a vessel. The embolic coil includes an elongated stretch resistant fiber having one distal end bonded to the distal end of the embolic coil. The stretch resistant fiber includes portions which take the form of periodic undulations separated by portions which are straight. The stretch resistant fiber extends through the lumen of the coil and the other distal end is bonded to the proximal end of the coil. The stretch resistant fiber may be attached to the embolic coil at additional points between the proximal and distal ends of the coil. Additionally, a headpiece is mounted on the proximal end of the embolic coil and serves to couple the embolic coil to a deployment catheter.

Vaso-occlusive devices are provided that have a polymer foam disposed about them. The polymer is treated with a plasma to facilitate thrombogenicity. A method for making and using such devices also is provided. The preferred polymer is a copolymer of a halogenated vinylidene and a halogenated alkene.

Plasma-treated vascular occlusion devices and methods

A medical device for placing an embolic device at a predetermined site within a vessel of the body including a delivery catheter and a flexible pusher member slidably disposed within the lumen of the catheter. A fluid pressure source is coupled to the proximal end of the pusher member. An embolic device is retained at the distal end of the pusher member by a mechanical interlocking mechanism. The distal end of the pusher member includes a spiral ribbon section encircled by a tubular member. The tubular member or the distal end of the pusher member directs fluid from the fluid pressure source against the embolic device. The mechanical interlocking mechanism is disengaged from the embolic device and a fluid pressure is applied against the embolic device to ensure the release of the embolic device.

A polymeric coating is applied to at least one embolic coil carried in a fixture, at least a portion of said embolic coil being generally vertical and straight. The coil is carried in the fixture during the processing, and may remain in the fixture if desired for further steps of processing.
