A passive cooling system routes air from an enclosure to an ambient environment, via a chimney effect, through one or more indirect pathways and re-directs environmental elements received from the ambient environment. One or more vanes are arranged within an interior space, such that the vanes collectively form one or more indirect pathways to the ambient environment. The vanes preclude environmental elements, including precipitation and particulate matter, from passing through the interior space and into the enclosure. Environmental elements are re-directed by one or more of the vanes, at least in part, to an exterior of the passive exhaust system. Dampers may be adjusted to control airflow through the passive cooling system and restrict environmental elements from entering the passive cooling system. Liquids received from the ambient environment may be re-directed into a reclamation system for use in a cooling system.

A modular computing system for a data center includes one or more data center modules including rack computer systems. An electrical module is coupled to the data center modules and provides electrical power to computer systems in the data center modules. The data center modules do not include any internal active cooling systems and cannot be coupled with any external active cooling systems. A data center module directs ambient air to flow into intake air plenums extending along intake sides of the rows of racks, through the rows of racks into exhaust plenums extending along exhaust sides of the rows of racks, and out into the ambient environment to cool computer systems in the racks. Directed airflow can be lateral, vertical, at least partially driven by air buoyancy gradients, at least partially induced by air moving devices internal to computer systems in the rows of racks, thereof, etc.

Modular data center without active cooling

A system for cooling a power distribution unit in a room of a data center includes an air handling system that supplies air to the room or removes air from the room through an opening in the room and an air directing device. The first end of the air directing device couples at the opening in the room. The second end of the air directing device couples with the power distribution unit at one or more openings of an enclosure of the power distribution unit. The air directing device directs air between the opening in the room and the one or more openings of the power distribution unit.

System and method for cooling power distribution units

A virtual temperature monitoring system in a data center communicates with servers mounted in racks to receive internal temperature data generated by internal temperature sensors of the servers. The system derives a virtual sensor measurement of external temperatures external to the server, including a portion of a cold aisle that extends proximate to a rack in which the server is mounted, based upon a relationship between the received internal temperature sensors and the external environment. Sensor data from other sensors can be received via a building management system, and building management signals to the building management system can be generated based at least partially on the virtual sensor data. The virtual sensor data can be used to generate a graphical representation of the servers that highlights relative thermal characteristics of the servers based on the virtual external sensor measurements, including heat indices, excursions beyond thresholds, historical excursion histories, etc.

A system for removing heat from electrical systems includes a dehumidification device including a desiccant, an evaporative cooling device, air moving devices, and an air flow control devices. The air moving device moves air through the dehumidification device, the evaporative cooling device, and the electrical systems. The air flow control device controls a rate of flow through the dehumidification device.

Power distribution infrastructure is incrementally deployed and commissioned to enable incremental infrastructure deployment to support incremental changes in computing capacity in a data center, where interaction between infrastructure being commissioned and installed computer systems is mitigated. Power distribution system commissioning includes coupling busway stub segments to a downstream end of the power distribution system and operating load banks, coupled to each busway stub segment, to simulate the power distribution system supporting electrical power consumption by multiple sets of computer systems through the busway stub segments. A power busway, installed via coupling busway segments to a busway stub segment, is commissioned while electrically isolated from the power distribution system via coupling a load bank and secondary power distribution system to opposite ends of the busway and operating the load bank to simulate the power busway supporting electrical power consumption by a set of computer systems, via reserve power, throughout the busway length.
