A method for providing a common framework for area of interest (AOI) specification and access. The method includes providing a first set of instructions which generates an area of interest (AOI) defined by a first geometric shape and defining the first geometric shape by one or more coordinates. The one or more coordinates are then converted to a second set of coordinates for use with a second set of instructions. The second set of coordinates is defined by a new AOI which includes information associated with the first set of instructions and which is interpreted by the second set of instructions.

Common method for communicating area information

A method and computer program product are disclosed for recognizing italic text in an optical character recognition system. A plurality of digital images of alphanumeric characters are created from a block of text, each comprising a plurality of rows of digital pixels. The digital images are preprocessed such that each image is normalized to equal size and the pixels within each image have a first value, such as 'black,' or a second value, such as 'white.' The position of the left-most pixel with a first value in each row is determined for each image. The position of each left-most pixel with a first value is recorded as an ordered pair including the row number and ordinal position within the row. A best-fit line and a corresponding slope are calculated for the ordered pairs via linear regression. The calculated slope is then compared to a predetermined threshold.

Method and computer program product for recognizing italicized text

A binarization method for gray address images which combines high quality and high speed. The method is designed specifically for efficient software implementation. Two binarization approaches, localized background thresholds and Laplacian edge enhancement, are combined into a process to enhance the strengths of the two methods and eliminate their weaknesses. The image is divided into tiles, making binarization decisions for each tile. Tile decisions are modified based on adjacent tile decisions and then the tiles are binarized. Binarization of pixels is performed by performing background thresholding and edge detection thresholding. Only pixels exceeding both thresholds are selected as &ldquo;on&rdquo;.

Real time binarization of gray images

A method and apparatus for evaluating a confidence level of a decoded barcode value is disclosed. A digit score is assigned to a digit within a barcode. When decoding the barcode, if a deduction is required to decode the digit, then the digit score for the digit is reduced accordingly. After all the digits within the barcode have been decoded, a total score of a decoded barcode value can be determined by adding all the digit scores for all the digits within the barcode. The total score of the decoded barcode value is reduced if a checksum is used to ascertain the value of any digit within the barcode. The decoded barcode value can be accepted only if the total score exceeds a predetermined value.

Method and apparatus for evaluating a confidence level of a decoded barcode

A system for assembling and communicating variable-length data messages over a computer network is adapted to access a master set of predefined data structures and select for inclusion within an assembled message those predefined data structures within the master set meeting a predetermined set of inclusion criteria. A message is assembled to include a set of selected predefined structures and an index including a set of index references. Each index reference corresponds to a data structure within the message and is indicative of the content of the data structure to which it corresponds. An offset reference is associated with each index reference of a selected set of index references included in the index. An offset reference is indicative of the location within the assembled message of a predefined data structure corresponding to the index reference with which the offset references is associated.
