A swing-out workbench extension for a workbench includes a rectangular swinging platform and four swinging upright members having equal lengths and each pivotably connected at the lower ends thereof to the rectangular platform, two on each side thereof. The four swinging upright members are pivotably mounted on the underside of a bench top of a workbench so that the rectangular swinging platform is movable between a stored position hanging below the bench top and an upper extended position generally adjacent a bench top. The rectangular platform extends at all times in a generally horizontal plane whereby tools mounted on the rectangular swinging platform are retained thereon, and a latch is provided for releasably locking the rectangular swinging platform in the upper extended position.

Swing-out workbench extension apparatus

A switching gesture display device for vehicles includes a main box and a shaft rotatably mounted in the main box with opposite ends extending through and outside the main box, the shaft being rotatable between an initial position and a rotated position. Two primary indicia displays are mounted on the opposite ends of the shaft, the two primary indicia displays being displayed in a generally upright position when the shaft is in the initial position, and two secondary indicia displays are mounted on the shaft generally adjacent the two primary indicia displays, the two secondary indicia displays being displayed in a generally upright position when the shaft is in the rotated position. A shaft rotation device rotates the shaft between the initial position and the rotated position to alternatively display the two primary indicia displays in the initial position and the two secondary indicia displays in the rotated position.

Switching hand gesture display device

A capillary and capillary retaining system including a capillary assembly having first and second end holders. The first and second end holders are adapted to be received by first and second retainers. The first end holder may include protruding portions and the first end retainer includes clips or clamps to engage the protruding portions. The second end holder may include opposite recesses and the second retainer is adapted to receive optical cables that are received within the recesses to retain the second end holder. The second retainer can further include a lever on the retainer body to pry the second holder out of the second retainer. Locks or clips retained by the second end retainer cooperate with grooves in the optical cables to retain the optical cables.

Capillary retaining system

A rotatable turntable for vortexing reactants comprises a vortexing plate which is rotatable. The motor drives for vortexing and rotation are stationary such that simple mechanical and electrical connection relative to the peripheral supports and to the vortexing plate can be achieved. A vortexing work station located in alignment with the turntable operates in synchronism with the turntable. Reactants at any radial reactant station on the vortexing plate can be withdrawn from and located onto the turntable at any radial location when the turntable stops rotation. The radial position of the turntable in relation to the outside vortexing and non-vortexing periphery remains relatively aligned.

Rotatable vortexing turntable

A reagent storage and delivery apparatus comprises a reagent cartridge having a plurality of fluidic chambers and includes a flange means for receiving a label to define a code indicating information concerning the contents of the cartridge. Preferably, a binary code is defined through use of windows formed in an extending portion of the cartridge which cooperate with a formed portion of the label applied to the cartridge. The binary code is optically read and translated to a digital information signal for instructional use with an analytical instrument.

Reagent storage and delivery system

A temperature control apparatus for controlling the temperature of a plurality of cuvettes consisting of an annular sealed chamber containing a refrigerant, means fixed to the sealed chamber for receiving the sample cuvettes, a heater in thermal contact with the sealed chamber, and a temperature sensor in thermal contact with the sealed chamber. The sealed chamber may include a plurality of thermally conductive posts fixed to the chamber, the spacing between adjacent ones of the posts being adapted to receive the sample cuvettes.

Temperature control apparatus for automated clinical analyzer

A method of operating a clinical analyzer wherein the analyzer includes a plurality of reaction locations divided into two groups. Predetermined operations are performed on the first and second groups during corresponding processing cycles. A process that is common to both cycles is performed simultaneously for reaction locations in the first and second groups during only one of the cycles. The other of the cycles can thus accommodate operations unique to particular tests that would not otherwise be available on the analyzer. The common process may be washing of adjacent reaction locations included in the first and second groups.

Analyzer operating method

A zero backlash device. The device includes a spring loaded bracket for providing a lateral force to the driving nut on a threaded rod. This lateral force is directed perpendicularly to the axis of the threaded shaft thus insuring continued intimate contact between the threads on the driving nut and the threads on the shaft.

A shear valve obtaining selective fluidic communication between fluid ports formed in a first member and fluid ports formed in a second member comprises a first seal with means for providing a fluidic seal between aligned ports and which separates the first and second members to form a passage, and a second sealing means to obtain a fluidic seal between the first and second members and enclose the passage. A fluid port is provided to introduce wash solution into the passage formed between the first and second members and a drain port is provided to remove the wash solution introduced between the first and second members, so that a wash and purge operation may be performed to cleanse the sealing surfaces of the valve.

A method for driving a stepper motor. The method includes varying the width of the high level drive impulses of a bi-level drive system based on the desired speed to be achieved by the stepper motor. A microprocessor is used to vary the pulse width.

Plunger operated pipet operable to execute successive fluid pickup and fluid discharge operations or strokes. A signalling system is provided which signals the occurrence of the second or fluid dispensing stroke of the plunger movement.

Pipet signalling system

A passive solar system for temperature control of the air inside homes and other buildings, comprising a pool of water to receive, store and dispense energy from direct sunlight passing through a glass wall, to strike the surface of the water in the pool. The pool has open connecting passage under its bottom and vertically along one of its sides, to form a convective conduit in which cold air is heated by the stored heat of the pool. Adjustable passages are placed through interior walls for convective flow of the pool-heated air into all desired parts of the building. The glass wall is advantageously placed for maximum incidence of heating sunlight upon the pool in winter, and maximum shading of the pool in the summer. A retractable eave may be provided to enhance these effects. During summer days, the pool serves as a heat sink, cooling the interior air. During summer nights, cooler outside air is admitted to the building to displace the warm air through ceiling and attic vents, cooling the building air, as well as the pool for the next day's use.

Solar air temperature control system for houses and other buildings

Plunger operated pipet operable to execute different lengths of plunger movement during successive fluid pickup and fluid discharge operations or strokes. A stop member is movable between first and second locations in the pipet body to halt plunger movement at two different positions. A drive spring for driving the stop member from one location to the other is energized by a manually operable arming element and is retained in one location against action of the drive spring during a first plunger stroke. A release mechanism responsive to plunger movement during the first stroke disables the retaining means allowing the drive spring to move the stop member to the second location at which position the plunger is halted during the succeeding discharge stroke. The arming element is actuated by and in response to positioning of a replaceable tip on the pipet body. The arming element exerts a force on the tip sufficient to expel the tip from the body unless the tip is properly seated on the body thus ensuring that the pipet is armed if the tip is properly seated. A signalling system is provided which signals the occurrence of the second or fluid dispensing stroke of plunger movement.

Plunger operated pipet

A stepper motor positioning control utilizing phase detection of the stepper motor windings. The device utilizes crude positioning apparatus to position the attached turntable or the like in an approximate position. The phase detection of the stepper motor windings is then used to position the attached turntable in the exact location desired.
