Resilient articles and methods of manufacturing thereof

A composition comprising (a) a resin composition comprising a block copolymer of the formula hydrocarbon-polyether-polyamide-polyether-hydrocarbon; and (b) a polar liquid. The block copolymer may be prepared by a process comprising reacting together reactants comprising dimer acid, diamine, and a polyether having termination at one end selected from amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl, and termination at another end selected from hydrocarbons. The polar liquid may be one or more of an aromatic liquid, a polar aprotic liquid, a ketone-containing liquid, an ester-containing liquid, an ether-containing liquid, an amide-containing liquid and a sulfoxide-containing liquid. The composition may be a gel at room temperature.

A process for making a textured coating on a substrate and compositions for such coatings are disclosed wherein coating mixtures comprising un-expanded micro-capsules and a plastisol or other suitable resins are applied to the substrate and subsequently heat treated to expand the micro-capsules within the coating. The expanded micro-capsules create an aesthetically pleasing surface texture in the coating while retaining the desired wear-resistant properties of the coating.

The foregoing differential gloss covering comprises a backing substrate, an ink layer, and a cured top layer having a first surface portion with a first gloss and a second surface portion, made by the process comprising providing the backing substrate; depositing an ink formulation comprising a curing agent over at least a first area of a top side of the backing substrate to form said ink layer; coating the top side of the backing substrate with a radiation curable formulation to form a top curable layer; diffusing at least a portion of the curing agent into the top curable layer; curing the top curable layer to form the cured top layer and thereby forming a differential gloss covering having said first surface portion above the first area of said top of said backing substrate having the first gloss and the second surface portion having the second gloss that is different from said first gloss.

A low molecular weight, tertiary amide terminated polyamide may be blended with a liquid hydrocarbon to form a transparent composition having gel consistency, and this gel may be used to formulate a cosmetic. The tertiary amide terminated polyamide may be prepared by reacting &ldquo;x&rdquo; equivalents of dicarboxylic acid wherein at least 50% of those equivalents are from polymerized fatty acid, &ldquo;y&rdquo; equivalents of diamine such as ethylene diamine, and &ldquo;z&rdquo; equivalents of a monofunctional reactant having a secondary amine group as the only reactive functionality. The stoichiometry of the reaction mixture is preferably such that 0.9&lE;&lcub;x/(y&plus;z)&rcub;&lE;1.1 and 0.1&lE;&lcub;z/(y&plus;z)&rcub;<0.7. The gel contains about 5-50% tertiary amide terminated polyamide, with the remainder preferably being pure hydrocarbon.

A tertiary amide-terminated dimer acid-based polyamide may be blended with a solvent to form a gel. The solvent may be flammable, and a wick may be added to the resulting gel so as to form a candle. Depending on the composition, the candle may be formed into a free-standing pillar, or may be better suited to being placed in a container. The solvent may, for example, be mineral oil or triglyceride. A solid coating may be placed around the candle, for advantages including to enhance the mechanical stability of the gelled body, and to eliminate the tendency of a gel to have an oily feel and to accept noticeable fingerprints. The solvent which, in combination with the tertiary amine-terminated dimer acid-based polymer forms a gel, may be or include a fragrance material. The gelled composition may also include fatty acid and/or a compound containing one, two, or more ester groups. In one aspect, the article does not contain a wick, and is intended to function as a fragrance-releasing product.

Gelled articles containing tertiary amide-terminated polyamide

In one embodiment the present invention provides a coated substrate comprising a substrate, a radiation-cured coating on at least a portion of the substrate, wherein the coating comprises an inherent macroscopic texture. In another embodiment, the present invention provides a pre-cured coating mixture comprising a radiation-curable resin and an initiator, wherein the radiation-curable resin and the initiator form a pre-cured coating mixture capable of forming a macroscopic texture upon application of the mixture on a substrate. In another embodiment the present invention provides a pre-cured coating mixture comprising a radiation-curable resin, an initiator, and texture-producing particles having an effective size to provide a macroscopic texture upon application of the mixture on a substrate. In another embodiment, the present invention provides a coated substrate comprising a substrate and a radiation-cured coating on at least a portion of the substrate, wherein the coating comprises an inherent macroscopic texture. In addition, the present invention provides a process for making a coating on a substrate, comprising the steps of distributing a pre-cured coating mixture comprising a radiation-curable resin and an initiator over at least a portion of a substrate to form a pre-cured coating having a macroscopic texture, and radiation-curing the pre-cured coating to form a radiation-cured coating having the macroscopic texture.

A block copolymer of the formula hydrocarbon-polyether-polyamide-polyether-hydrocarbon is described. The copolymer may be prepared by reacting together reactants that include dimer acid, diamine, and a polyether having both hydrocarbon termination and termination selected from one of amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl. The copolymer may be combined with a solvent to form a gel, where the gel may be transparent and may be incorporated into household and consumer products including antiperspirants.

Gels including bioactive components

Substrates that are moisture-sensitive and/or corrosion-sensitive, such as electrical components found in fiber optic cables, copper wires, terminal blocks, connections and junctions, are protected from moisture and/or corrosion with a protectant composition that includes a polyamide gelling agent, a gelled solvent, and optionally a bleeding agent. The electrical components are typically contacted with the protective composition to protect the sensitive component from moisture and/or corrosion.
