A mobile station () for use in a wireless communication system includes a steerable antenna, means for obtaining location information relating to a current location of the mobile station and a steering controller for controlling a pointing direction of the steerable antenna using the location information and characterized in that the mobile station includes a memory holding a database of optimal pointing directions of the steerable antenna for given locations and the steering controller is operable to steer the antenna to the optimal pointing direction indicated in the database for the current location. Also described is a system and a method in which the mobile station operates.

Mobile station, system and method for use in wireless communications

An apparatus and method for synchronization between uncoordinated Time Division Duplex (TDD) communication networks includes a first step () of measuring an interference level on channels available to a base station. A next step () includes choosing the channel having the lowest interference level. A next step () includes determining that the interference is from a base station. A next step () includes calculating an interference profile over the frame cycle. A next step () includes establishing a peak interference level. A next step () includes aligning the base station frame timing in response to the peak interference level.

Synchronization between uncoordinated time division duplex communication networks

A mobile communication system is described. The system has an infrastructure that includes base stations and has mobile stations, a mobile terminal and a mobile controller. Each mobile station is operable to communicate with one of the base stations. The mobile terminal is coupled to first and second mobile stations to provide a communication link to at least one of the base stations. The mobile controller sends instruction messages to the mobile stations regarding connectivity with the base stations. The mobile terminal, the mobile controller and the first and second mobile stations are carried on a moving object. The mobile controller makes decisions and issues instructions to the mobile stations relating to the base station by which they should each be served with to maintain a communication link between the mobile terminal and a serving base station via at least one of the mobile stations.

The invention concerns a digital radio () for pseudo-duplex radio communication, and a method of transmission time mediation for pseudo-duplex radio communication. A digital radio () is in time division duplex communication with a second digital radio (). The digital radio () derives a source signal activity parameter (VAD) indicating the likelihood of there being a source signal for transmission by the digital radio () to the second digital radio () over a single radio channel. The digital radio () also derives a first value (VADDir) of a signal direction parameter (VADDir) in dependence on both the value of the signal activity parameter (VAD) for the digital radio () and a second value (VADDir) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir) received from the second digital radio (); The digital radio () selects the proportions of time for transmission and reception over the single radio channel in dependence on the first value (VADDir) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir). The digital radio () also transmits the first value (VADDir) of the signal direction parameter (VADDir) to the second digital radio (), to allow the second digital radio () to perform an analogous update of its value of the signal direction parameter (VADDir). The apparatus and method of the invention are robust to radio channel and VAD value imperfections.
