In dual mode document imaging systems for either scanning a stationary document with a moving document imager on a large fixed platen or feeding documents past an imaging station on an adjacent smaller platen with the same document imager held there stationary, the smaller platen is mounted to allow vertical movement to allow for different thickness of documents being fed relative to a fixed axis of rotation constant velocity document transport. Thin flexible transition members bridge the outer edges of the gap between the lower surface of the vertically movable smaller platen and the lower surface of the fixed platen to allow the document imager to laterally slide freely, on focal distance maintaining slide pads, across a small gap between the bottom surface of one platen and the bottom surface of the other, with the document imager being spring biased upwardly towards the lower surfaces of both platens.

In a raster input scanner adapted to perform multiple scans of a document through a series of color filters, a mechanism exploits the reciprocating motion of the scanner relative to the document platen to effect the changing of filters between scans without the addition of a separate motor.

A device for rotating by a small angle, documents placed on an imaging device platen, for improved skew angle registration during imaging. An imaging device provided with a platen cover for covering the imaging platen of the imaging device includes document engagement member rotatably supported on the platen cover, between the imaging platen and the platen cover when the platen cover is in a closed position with respect to the platen of the imaging device. The document engagement member has a document contacting surface providing substantially non-slipping engagement of the document engagement member with documents placed on the platen when the platen cover is closed. An arrangement is provided for rotational adjustment of documents placed on the platen, at an externally accessible surface of the platen cover, and coupled to the document engagment member, for rotating the document engagement member through a small angle increment, and by consequence, documents engaged thereto, with respect to the platen.
