An apparatus for improving exhaust gas recirculation performance is provided which induces improved exhaust gas recirculation flow during engine operating transients, including transients in which exhaust gas flow conditions are unfavorable. The apparatus includes a fresh air intake passage with a venturi section and an exhaust gas recirculation passage outlet, preferably in the form of a pitot tube, arranged in the fresh air intake passage adjacent to the venturi section such that a pressure-reducing flow in the fresh air is induced as a result of the Coand&#x103; effect. Establishing Coand&#x103; flow adjacent to the exhaust gas recirculation outlet substantially assists in drawing exhaust gas into the fresh air intake flow in transient operating conditions, including unfavorable exhaust-to-intake pressure difference conditions. The Coand&#x103; flow also assists in more rapid and thorough mixing the gases to provide a homogeneous mixture to minimize NOx production during engine operating transients.

Method to enhance gas recirculation in turbocharged diesel engines

An apparatus and method for improving vehicle performance by application of pneumatic boost to vehicle engines, including diesel engines having at least one turbocharger supplying air to the engine, in a manner which increases engine torque output while minimizing the potential for exceed various operating limits to the maximum practicable extent. The vehicle's pneumatic booster system controller implements strategies for shaping the rate of the air injection during a boost event, tailoring the air injection to obtain maximum engine torque output while respecting the operating limits, by controlling the timing, duration, quantity and/or injection pattern during a boost event to achieve a refined distribution of compressed air injection over the course of the boost event to provide desired engine torque output and fuel efficiency while minimizing the potential for exceeding a wide variety of operation limits, regulatory, engineering and passenger comfort limits.

A roll stability control system for a pneumatically operated vehicle brake system is implemented using simpler ABS hardware rather than more complex EBS hardware. For each brake chamber or channel, two 3/2 solenoid controlled valves are used. An ECU is operative to control the solenoids. The ECU is preferably operative to provide a selected delivery pressure to the brake chamber without measurement of delivery pressure to the brake chamber. Supply air is provided at a known pressure to a first solenoid controlled valve that is associated with the brake chamber; the amount of time of energization and de-energization of the first valve that is needed to provide an output therefrom of a given pressure, is calculated; and the first valve is energized and de-energized for the calculated times, thereby to cause a low-pressure test pulse to be provided to the brake chamber.
