A dual-sided two-ply direct thermal image element is provided. In one embodiment, the dual-sided two-ply direct thermal image element comprises a first substrate having a first side and a second side, and a second substrate having a first side and a second side, wherein both the first substrate and the second substrate include a thermally sensitive coating on at least a first side thereof, and wherein the second side of the first substrate is releasably attached to the second side of the second substrate.

The present invention provides a direct thermal printer, which may include first and second printheads and first and second platens. The first printhead can be positioned proximate to a first platen, and a second printhead can be positioned proximate to a second platen. Generally, the first printhead is in a substantially opposed relation to the second platen and the second printhead is in a substantially opposed relation to the first platen.

Paper and ink, each having a reactive component of a two part epoxy system, provide documents with print which is resistant to mechanical and chemical alteration. When the paper and ink are used in a printing process, the reactive components of the epoxy system form a thermoset polymer that fuses the ink to the paper. Money orders, checks, legal documents and transaction receipts resistant to alteration are provided.

There is provided by the present invention a coating formulation and thermal transfer ribbons which provide printed images which are readable by magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) devices. These formulations and ribbons minimize the use of organic solvents in employing wax, binder resin and an aqueous based ferrofluid with magnetic pigment particles. MICR readable printed images are also provided as are thermal printers which employ the ribbons.

An apparatus for reinking a printing ribbon which includes a tank for ink fitted with a ball which, when rotated, transfers a quantity of ink to a sheathed wheel which in turn transfers this ink to a gear through which the ribbon travels and absorbs the ink is provided. An inked printing ribbon cassette including the reinking apparatus is also provided.
