A process for producing cyclopentane from by-product streams containing cyclopentene consists of distilling the cyclopentene from the feedstream and then hydrotreating the cyclopentene-containing fraction to cyclopentane. A second distillation step may then be employed to remove the hydrocarbons which are lighter than cyclopentane. The process has particular applicability in the treatment of feedstreams containing neo-hexane. The cyclopentene is easily separated from the neo-hexane in a conventional fractionator.

Method of producing purified cyclopentane

Olefins may be produced by thermally steam cracking residuum containing a short residuum having a boiling point range greater than 565&deg; C. wherein at least 3 weight percent of the short residuum has a boiling point greater than or equal to 650&deg; C. The residuum has pentane insolubles less than or equal to 1.2, ASTM 893. Further, the weight percent of hydrogen of the residuum is greater than or equal to 12.5. Such feedstocks are produced by hydrotreating, where necessary, a petroleum residuum having pentane insolubles less than 1.0, ASTM 893, until the weight percent of hydrogen of the petroleum residuum is 12.5. Where necessary, the petroleum residuum may be deasphalted prior to subjecting it to hydrotreatment.

Method of producing olefins from petroleum residua

This invention relates to a process in which a linear olefin is converted under isomerizing conditions to its corresponding methyl branched isoolefin by contact at a temperature of from 200.degree. C. to 650.degree. C. with an isomerizing catalyst comprising (i) at least one zeolite having only in one dimension a pore structure having a pore size small enough to retard by-product dimerization and coke formation and large enough to permit entry of the linear olefin and allow formation of the methyl branched isoolefin, (ii) an alumina binder and (iii) up to about 15% by weight of coke oxidation-promoting metal. After a period of operation, when sufficient coke has deposited on the catalyst in an amount to significantly reduce the activity of the catalyst, the catalyst is stripped of hydrocarbon and then contacted at elevated temperature with an oxygen-containing gas for a sufficient time to burn off the coke, i.e., to regenerate the catalyst at a temperature of less than about 565.degree. C. After regeneration, the isomerization process is continued. The use of palladium and/or platinum as the coke oxidation-promoting metal is particularly desirable.
