A licensing application implemented in a computational device receives a request to enable a feature for a logical volume of a plurality of logical volumes controlled by the computational device, wherein each feature of a plurality of features is configurable to be enabled or disabled for one or more logical volumes of the plurality of logical volumes. The licensing application determines, whether enabling the feature for the logical volume causes a licensed capacity limit for the feature to be exceeded. Enabling the feature for the logical volume is avoided, in response to determining that enabling the feature for the logical volume causes the licensed capacity limit for the feature to be exceeded.

Enablement of licensed features at a logical volume level of granularity

Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for sharing alias addresses among logical devices by a host accessing logical devices provisioned with a capacity from physical devices managed by a control unit. The host establishes with the control unit an association of logical devices and alias addresses assigned to the logical devices, wherein the alias addresses are associated with an alias management group. Alias address pool information is generated indicating each of the logical devices and their assigned alias addresses indicated in the association. The host uses from the alias address pool information any one of the alias addresses in the alias address pool information to access any of the logical devices associated with the same alias management group as the alias address.

Sharing alias addresses among logical devices

Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for sharing alias addresses among logical devices for a control unit managing access by hosts to logical devices configured with capacity from attached physical devices. An alias management group of logical devices and alias addresses assigned to the logical devices is configured. A plurality of requests to establish an association of the host with a logical device and the alias addresses assigned to the logical devices in the alias management group are received from a host. Acknowledgment is made to the host that the association is established in response to determining that the host is assigned the logical devices and alias addresses of the logical devices in the alias management group. The host can use one available alias address assigned to any one of the logical devices to access any one of the logical devices indicated in the association.

An apparatus, system, and method for generating an advanced function usage planning report. One embodiment of the apparatus includes a detection module, a monitoring module, and a planning report module. The detection module detects use of an advanced function on a storage controller. The advanced function includes an optional storage function beyond a standard function set. The monitoring module monitors the use of the advanced function on the storage controller. The planning report module generates a planning report based at least in part on use information from the monitored use of the advanced function.

Generating an advanced function usage planning report

For advanced function usage-based billing, a processor detects the storage controller associating a microcode version for a given advanced function of one or more advanced functions with a logical volume. A given customer is associated with the logical volume. In response to detecting the storage controller associating the microcode version for the given advanced function with the logical volume, the processor monitors for use of a memory address of the microcode version and a logical volume address of the logical volume. The processor further detects an associated use of the memory address of the microcode version and the logical volume address of the logical volume. In response to detecting the associated use, the processor communicates the given advanced function and the given customer to a billing entity.

Advanced function usage detection

Monitoring a level of utilization is provided. A threshold is determined based, at least in part, on a count of service channels of a device. An upper boundary value of a numerical range is determined based, at least in part, on the count of service channels. A lower boundary value of the numerical range is determined based, at least in part, on the threshold. Whether a count of outstanding requests of the device is contained within the numerical range is determined. An estimated level of utilization of the device is determined based, at least in part, on the upper boundary value, the lower boundary value, the count of service channels, and the count of outstanding requests. The estimated level of utilization is reported.

Monitoring levels of utilization of device

A method, system, and computer program product for safeguarding nonvolatile storage (NVS) data by a processor in communication with a memory device following a power loss event is provided. A first portion of the NVS data is encrypted using a first buffer module. Subsequently the first portion of the NVS data is transferred to at least one shared storage device, while a second portion of the NVS data is simultaneously encrypted using a second buffer module. The second portion of the NVS data is subsequently transferred to the at least one shared storage device.

Rapid safeguarding of NVS data during power loss event

Systems and methods for initializing a memory system are provided. One system includes a processor and a memory including a storage volume coupled to the processor. The storage volume includes a first bitmap for tracking an initialization process for the storage volume and a second bitmap for tracking a copying process for the storage volume. A method includes performing, via the processor, an initialization process for the storage volume and tracking, via the processor utilizing the first bitmap, the initialization process. The method further includes performing, via the processor, a copying process for the storage volume prior to completing the initialization process and tracking, via the processor utilizing the second bitmap, the copying process. Also provided are computer storage mediums including computer program code for performing the above method.

Systems and methods for initializing a memory system

Estimating a level of concurrency is provided. An estimated level of concurrency of a device is determined. A first average response time, wherein the first average response time is an average of response times of a first set of operations of the device is determined. A second average response time is determined, wherein the second average response time is an average of response times of a second set of operations of the device, wherein each of the second set of operations is initiated under conditions of minimal interference of the device. A threshold based on the estimated level of concurrency is determined. The estimated level of concurrency is updated based, at least in part, on a ratio of the second average response time to the first average response time.

Monitoring device usage

Establishing hierarchical user management authority for storage resources organized into resource groups in a computing storage environment are provided. Each storage resource is associated with a resource group and storage resource object having a resource group attribute associating the storage resource object with one of the resource groups. The resource group label attribute is assigned to the resource group object. An additional attribute of the resource group object, that specifies management policies for the resource group object and the storage resources associated with the resource group object, is defined. One of the available users of the storage resources is associated with a user resource scope attribute. A schema is defined for comparing of values of the user resource scope attribute with the resource group label attribute.

Hierarchical multi-tenancy management of system resources in resource groups

A mapping system and method that enables a secure reservation mode for a plurality of logical unit numbers of a storage system, generates a plurality of secret reservation keys, and instructs a distributed client to utilize at least one of the secret reservation keys to register with the storage system and to issue secure persistent reserves to the plurality of logical unit numbers.
