The present invention is particularly directed to graphenic dispersion and slurry compositions and the production and uses thereof, where these compositions exhibit one or more of the hallmark strength, thermal or electrical properties of 'pure' graphene while at the same time being optimized in terms of solubility or other properties necessary for compatibility with one or more end processes. In specific embodiments, a composition of matter includes a graphenic mixture and at least one species of polymerized product of benzyl alcohol, and a method of making such composition of matter comprises sonicating the graphenic mixture in heated benzyl alcohol. In a further specific embodiment, a composition of matter is formed by sonicating a graphenic mixture in heated benzyl alcohol, wherein the resulting composition exhibits a binder functionality in the absence of exogenous binder.

Graphenic dispersions and slurries and coatings thereof

The invention generally relates to polymer films used as protective cover sheets for polarizer plates, a method for producing polarizing plates, and a Liquid Crystal Display employing the same. More particularly, the invention relates to a cover sheet composite having a removable, carrier substrate and a cover sheet comprising a low birefringence polymer film and a layer that promotes adhesion to polyvinyl alcohol on the same side of the carrier substrate as the low birefringence polymer film. The guarded cover sheet of the invention is less susceptible to defects due to dirt and abrasion during the manufacture of the cover sheet and polarizer plates. In addition, the cover sheet has excellent adhesion to polyvinyl alcohol-containing dichroic films and eliminates the need to alkali treat the cover sheet prior to lamination to the dichroic films.

An imaging support element comprising a polymeric film support and a thermally stable single subbing layer is made by forming a coating over the polymeric film support, the coating having a surface including amine reactive groups in a density of at least 10,per cm,and then heat treating the polymeric film support with the coating thereon at a temperature in the range of from about 50&deg; C. below the glass transition temperature (T,) of the polymeric support up to the glass transition temperature (T,) of the polymeric support. The polymeric film support is nitrogen plasma treated. The layer is preferably formed by coating a monomer solution on the nitrogen plasma treated polymer support wherein the coated monomer has at least two vinyl sulfone groups which provide the amine reactive groups. The present invention is a photographic element containing a support, at least one light sensitive emulsion layer superposed on the first side of the support, and an outermost lubricant layer superposed on the support. The outermost layer includes more than 80 percent by weight of a composite wax particle. The composite wax particle includes a wax phase and a non-crosslinked polymer phase. The wax phase is greater than 80 percent by weight of a wax which has a melting point of greater than 30&deg; C. In one embodiment the lubricant layer contains a fluoro containing compound. It is envisioned that the lubricant layer overlies a transparent magnetic layer. The total coating weight of the composite wax particle in the lubricant layer is in the range of from 1 to 300 mg/m,. Preferably, the fluoro compound contains at least one type of an ionic group or a nonionic group.

Silver halide photographic elements

The present invention is a photographic element including a substrate with a polyolefin resin layer, which is preferably polypropylene, on each surface of the substrate. At least one of these polyolefin surfaces is coated with an adhesion promoting primer layer having a dry coverage of from 0.5 mg/m.sup.2 to 1000 mg/m.sup.2, wherein the primer comprises an interpolymer of a primary amine addition salt.

Primer layer for photographic element

The present invention is a photographic element including a substrate with a polyolefin resin layer, which is preferably polypropylene, on each surface of the said substrate. The photographic paper includes a print or backmark retaining and spliceable antistatic layer having a dry coverage of from 10 mg/m.sup.2 to 10,000 mg/m.sup.2 on one of the free surfaces of the polyolefin layers. An imaging layer may be superimposed on the other free surface of the polyolefin layers. The antistatic layer includes a (i) conductive agent, preferably a combination of an alkali metal salt and a polymerized alkylene oxide, (ii) a positively charged colloidal oxide sol and (iii) a film forming binder which is an interpolymer of a primary amine addition salt with a peel strength of 200 g or above on the polyolefin surface on which the antistatic layer of the present invention is to be formed. The antistatic layer is expected to provide surface electrical resistivity of less than 12 log .OMEGA./, preferably equal to or less than 11 log .OMEGA./, and excellent backmark retention characteristics and spliceability for commercial photofinishing equipment such as the Gretag CLAS 35 printers.

A support for an imaging element is described, which support comprises a polyester polymeric film having coated thereon a subbing layer comprising gelatin and a multi-hydric organic compound having at least three hydroxyl groups, which gelatin subbing layer coated support has been subjected to a heat treatment to reduce the core-set curling tendency of the polymeric film. Imaging elements for use in an image-forming process is also described, which elements comprise a gelatin subbing layer coated polyester polymeric film support as described above, and an image-forming layer coated on the subbed support. A method for forming a heat-tempered, gelatin-subbed support for an imaging element is also described, comprising coating a subbing layer comprising gelatin and a multi-hydric organic compound having at least three hydroxyl groups on a polyester polymeric film, and subjected the coated film to heat treatment to reduce the core-set curling tendency of the polymeric film. In accordance with preferred embodiment of the invention, the polymer film comprises poly(ethylene naphthalate), the multi-hydric organic compound comprises glycerol, sorbitol, or pentaerythritol, and the heat treatment comprises subjecting the gelatin subbing layer coated support to a temperature of from 50.degree. C. up to the glass transition temperature of the polymeric film for from 0.1 to 1500 hours.

Thermally stable subbing layer for imaging elements

The present invention comprises a polyester film support in which the surface has been subjected to an energetic treatment with nitrogen plasma to produce amine groups on the polyester surface. The treated surface is then coated with a dilute solution of amine reactive hardener and gelatin. After drying the hardener/gelatin coated support a photographic emulsion is coated on the surface. The resulting film element has excellent adhesion of the photographic emulsion after photoprocessing, and it is safer to coat and handle than previously known methods involving grafting of hardener directly to the support.

A coating composition useful for forming an electrically conductive layer on a substrate is disclosed, said composition comprising a liquid medium containing: a) a vanadium oxide gel, b) a film-forming binder, and c) a conductivity-increasing amount of a volatile aromatic compound comprising an aromatic ring substituted with at least one hydroxy group or a hydroxy substituted substituent group. Further embodiments of the invention disclose a composite support for an imaging element, which composite support comprises a polymeric film having coated thereon an electrically conductive layer, wherein the electrically conductive layer has been formed by applying a coating of the coating composition of the invention, and drying the coating. In accordance with yet a further embodiment of the invention, an imaging element for use in an image-forming process is described, which element comprises a support, an image-forming layer, and an electrically conductive layer, said electrically conductive layer having been formed by applying a coating of the coating composition of the invention, and drying the coating. The invention provides composite supports and imaging elements containing an electrically conductive antistatic layer having excellent antistatic performance and adhesion to polymer film supports.
