A receiver includes a first oscillator supplying a reference frequency signal; a reference signal generator producing a first frequency conversion signal and a local calibration signal from the reference frequency signal; a first frequency converter responsive to the first frequency conversion signal to down-convert the received signal during normal receive operation and to down-convert the local calibration signal during calibration processing; a second frequency converter responsive to a second frequency conversion signal from a second oscillator to further down-convert the received signal and the local calibration signal; a demodulator that demodulates the received signal at a demodulation frequency; and a frequency error processor that determines a frequency error from the local calibration signal at the demodulation frequency, wherein the reference signal generator adjusts a frequency of the first frequency conversion signal used during normal receive operation in response to the frequency error to compensate for the frequency error.

Methods and apparatus for calibrating oscillators in a receiver

An embedded method for analyzing RF channel communication link parameters can include inserting data having a predetermined pattern to a transmission at a transmitter, processing the data through a waveform processor, transmitting the data across a communications link at traffic rates, receiving the transmitted data at a receiver, and determining a RF channel bit error rate of the transmitted data at the receiver. The transmitted data can include embedded synchronization and operating mode patterns such that the receiver can distinguish the transmitted data from contemporaneous voice or other data transmissions. A method for tracking received bits and counting received errors can include providing received bits to a decryption process, and providing test bits to an error analysis application to determine a total number of received errors.

In a digital communications system for transmitting and receiving digital data over a CSMA-type network having a source for transmitting a source signal comprising a synchronization interval and a data interval and at least one receiver for receiving a second signal having a second synchronization interval and a second data interval corresponding to the data interval of the source signal, comprising: receiver means responsive to the source signal for synchronizing the source within the synchronization interval and providing a retransmit request signal indicative of the source signal; transmitter means responsive to the retransmit request signal for synchronizing at least one receiver within one CSMA time interval delay of the synchronization interval and for transmitting the second data interval to the at least one receiver within one CSMA time interval delay of the source data interval; and interface means for synchronizing the receiver means with the transmitter means to enable data transmission therebetween.

There is disclosed an improved multi-mode, spread spectrum digital radio comprising: a radio frequency (RF) subsystem for converting spread spectrum digital signals comprising voice and data communications between baseband and RF signal frequencies in response to control signals; a digital signal processor based baseband subsystem having isolation interface means bidirectionally coupled to the RF subsystem for minimizing RF and baseband signal interference; the baseband subsystem operable to control the mode of operation, to provide interface control signals to the RF subsystem based on the mode, to format the transmitted and received digital signals, and to provide external controls and status to a user to enable selectable mode switching.
