An infrared communication system for transmitting a digital bit stream by telemetry in the presence of background radiation wherein each bit in the data stream is represented by a signature set of pulses designating either a binary one or a binary zero. A receiver detecting an infrared signal filters the signal to detect the signature sets of pulses generated by the transmitter. The pulses are transmitted according to a specific communications protocol.

High speed infrared communications system using pulse sets

A raster scan cathode ray tube (CRT) display system which is capable of indirectly addressing data to be displayed in an manner presenting the data on any selected row or group of rows, in any order. A scrolling system according to the invention includes a cathode ray tube controller (CRTC) coupled to an indirect address counter which is coupled together with a presettable counter through a multiplexer (MUX) to the address port of a CRT display refresh memory (RAM), a segment of the data output port of the refresh memory being coupled to the preset port of the presettable counter. The invention operates by generating a refresh address indirectly through the presettable counter which addresses pointers in the refresh memory, each pointer containing the absolute address of the beginning of a specific line of data in the refresh memory which is to be displayed. During the blanking interval of the display, data is addressed by the indirect address counter. During other intervals, the address presented to the refresh memory is generated by the refresh address counter (the presettable binary counter). The address which is provided at the refresh address counter dictates the line of characters which are therafter displayed.

An intersection control system is described which coordinates a plurality of intersections each of which is responsive to local requests for service. Traffic control coordination is accomplished between a plurality of intersections by providing for each intersection an Intersection Control Unit capable of response to local demand and a variety of permitted phase conditions, and by providing a processing unit for each group of intersections (a Network Processing Unit) which determines the permitted phase conditions at the intersections within constraints of system-wide parameters, including a system-synchronizing background cycle. Each Network Processing Unit is provided with sets of special function timers, binary sensors and binary command switches which permit timing of the phases applicable to each intersection and which gate the splits in coordination with the background cycle. Selected phases are serviced in preference to other phases if adequate excess time is available prior to required synchronous operation according to demand within minimum and maximum split limits. In addition, the concept of a fixed phase is introduced, which permits the synchronization of all system operations to activation of a specific phase at a fixed time in a background cycle.
