A lancet type device having a movable and retractable lancet tip is disclosed. The lancet tip extends beyond the end of a lancet body. The device includes an actuating mechanism that moves and retracts the sharp distal lancet tip linearly into and out of contact with a patient's skin. The actuating mechanism includes an arm with a substantially 'V' shaped groove. In one embodiment, the arm extends away from and pivots around the proximal end of the device. In another embodiment, the arm moves transversely across the device. A cylindrical cam follower protrudes from the lancet body. Contact between the groove and the cam follower moves the cam follower, and consequently the lancet body, in a linear direction along the axis of the lancet body.

A battery compartment for a device having a housing is provided. The battery compartment pivots around an axis that is generally parallel with a wall of housing. The battery compartment is generally an elongated wedge or sector shape with an elongated pivoting axis extending along the apex of the wedge. One planar side of the wedge becomes a portion of the wall of the housing as the battery compartment is pivoted about the elongated axis into a closed position. This planar side becomes a door into the housing that is opened or closed as the battery compartment is pivoted around its pivoting axis. As the battery compartment is pivoted around its pivoting axis, the battery compartment rotates out and away from the plane that previously encompassed the wall of the device so that access to the batteries may be had. The battery compartment encloses the batteries and segregates them from the other components in the housing. Furthermore, the battery compartment of the instant invention prevents foreign objects from being introduced into the interior of the housing when the door of the battery compartment is in either of its open or closed positions, or being moved therebetween. In one embodiment of the instant invention, switches, such as DIP switches, are attached to the battery compartment so that as the battery compartment is rotated around its pivoting axis, access may be had to the switches.

The present invention relates to a support device for use with a fluid delivery system which includes a fluid delivery set and an infusion pump. The support device allows simple attachment of various types of fluid delivery sets and infusion pumps thereto and is adapted for use with bed ridden patients in a traditional manner, or for ambulatory patient use. The support device includes a compartment for securely holding an infusion pump and a separate compartment for securely holding a fluid container of the fluid delivery set. The device further includes an elongate channel into which the tubing of the fluid delivery set can be inserted and subsequently protected from kinking or inadvertent occlusion, and is adapted for use with rigid bottle, flexible bag, burette, spike sets, or other standard types of fluid delivery sets. The device may be used on an infusion pole in a standard manner, placed on a horizontal surface such as a table, or enclosed in a carrying case for ambulatory use.

A medical device particularly adapted for use with a blood collection tube including a nonlinear needle having first and second needle points wherein the first needle point is selectively protected by a movable protective shield and the second needle point is designed to pierce the stopper of an evacuated blood collection tube. A rotary type of peristaltic pump having the rotor member mounted on one side thereof and including a swing arm rotatably mounted along the side of the peristaltic pump such that the swing arm is movable between a fluid delivery set loading open position and a pair of closed positions which automatically align and stretch a portion of the fluid delivery set around the rotor member to allow for the convenient loading of the fluid delivery set on the peristaltic pump and to ensure that the fluid delivery set is properly aligned about the rotor member of the peristaltic pump. A latch member on the swing arm provides a secondary position wherein the flow of fluid through the fluid delivery set is prevented.

A charger unit assembly is disclosed which is particularly adapted to receive a peristaltic pump thereon for charging the batteries of the peristaltic pump and to provide power to the peristaltic pump. A clamp member is mounted on the rear surface of the charger unit to mount the peristaltic pump and charger unit on a support pole. The peristaltic pump includes a rotor member mounted on one side thereof and a swing arm rotatably mounted along the side of the peristaltic pump such that the swing arm is movable between a fluid delivery set loading open position and a closed position which automatically aligns and stretches a portion of the fluid delivery set around the rotor member to ensure that the fluid delivery set is properly aligned about the rotor member of the peristaltic pump.

A charger unit assembly is disclosed which is particularly adapted to receive the peristaltic pump thereon for charging the batteries of the peristaltic pump; to provide power to the peristaltic pump and for mounting the peristaltic pump on a support pole. The peristaltic pump also includes drip chamber yoke assembly consisting of a pair of outwardly extending members which receive the drip chamber of the fluid delivery set therein. These members are spaced apart a predetermined distance so that if the length of the drip chamber is less than the predetermined distance, the drip chamber will be supported by the top member. If the length of the drip chamber is greater than the predetermined distance, the drip chamber will be supported by the bottom member.
