An example multi-lumen member forming dual inflation portions of a catheter assembly for treating bifurcated vessels includes a main tube defining a main lumen and a main inflation portion. The member includes a side tube defining a side lumen and a side inflation portion, the side tube extending along at least a first length of the main tube. The member also includes a portion extending along the first length of the main tube and coupling the main tube to the side tube to form a dual lumen configuration.

Balloon systems for treating bifurcated lumens include desirable burst and folding characteristics. In some cases, the balloon systems can be formed by varying the wall thickness of a balloon parison.

A reinforced composite balloon may comprise a body layer and a reinforcing layer. The reinforcing layer may comprise a single-layer structural network having a plurality of apertures. The reinforcing layer may be molded from a reinforcing tube having a plurality of apertures or aperture precursor holes.

A catheter assembly includes a main catheter branch and a side catheter branch. The main catheter branch includes a main balloon, a side balloon and a side inflation member. The side inflation member intersects the side balloon at a location on the side balloon that is offset laterally from a central line passing from a distal most point on the side balloon to a proximal most point on the side balloon. The side balloon is configured to extend radially outward relative to the main balloon when the side balloon is inflated. The side catheter branch can be centrally aligned with the side balloon central line and be positioned laterally adjacent to the side inflation lumen.

Bifurcation catheter assembly and methods

A catheter inflatable member forming mold can include first and second frames that mate to define a mold cavity, the mold cavity defining a main cavity portion and a bulge cavity portion, the mold cavity being sized to receive an elongated tube member therein. The mold can also include a pin member with a head portion positioned in the mold cavity, the pin member extending into the mold cavity, the head portion of the pin member being moveable in a first direction to contact and move the tube member towards the bulge cavity portion of the mold cavity during molding.

Manufacture of inflatable member for bifurcation catheter assembly

An implantable medical device and method for adjustably restricting a selected body lumen such as a urethra or ureter of a patient to treat urinary incontinence or ureteral reflux. The device includes an adjustable element and a tubular elongate body, where the adjustable element includes a chamber and the tubular elongate body includes at least a first interior passageway which extends longitudinally in the tubular elongate body from a first opening at the proximal end to a second opening in fluid communication with the chamber. Fluid volume passed through the first passageway is used for adjustably expanding or contracting the adjustable element. The implantable medical device further includes a sheath and a sleeve, where the sheath includes a wall having an inner surface which defines a channel through which at least a portion of the implantable device and the sleeve can pass. Alternatively, the implantable medical device includes a tip suitable to penetrate tissue so that the implantable medical device can be implanted within the tissue of a patient.

Apparatus and method for inserting an adjustable implantable genitourinary device

Device and method for heating tissue, the device having a catheter shaft for insertion into a patient's body, a chamber formed by a collapsible balloon mounted on the catheter shaft and filled with an electrically conductive fluid, two or more electrical contacts enclosed within the chamber, a power supply for applying an electrical potential to the contacts, and a two or more conductors for connecting each of the contacts to the power supply. The fluid is heated on the basis of I.sup.2 R losses by a radio frequency electric current flowing between the electrodes, and the fluid in turn heats the surrounding tissue by heat transfer through the wall of the chamber. According to the method, the apparatus is inserted into the patient's body, the chamber is filled with an electrically conductive fluid, and an electrical potential is applied to the contacts. The apparatus functions as a temperature source. A thermister sensor in the balloon or in contact with tissue responds to the heating effect to control the application of the current. Advantageously, by periodic sensing of temperature, and application of controlled rf power, a preset constant temperature is maintained at the selected sensing point, either at the internal body site or the liquid within the balloon. In this way carefully controlled therapy can be conducted at constant temperature.

Device for heating tissue in a patient's body

An inflatable medical balloon is formed by fabricating a tubular preform having a tapered region at the end of the portion where the main body of the balloon will form to enable the corresponding transition section of the blown balloon to have a separately controllable thickness profile. The preferred method includes providing a tube of a selected resin of wall thickness and diameter suitable for being formed into a balloon, and selectively heating to drawing temperature a defined region of the tube at one or both ends of the portion of the tube from which the balloon is to be formed. Tension is applied in opposite directions to respective ends of the heated region to draw the region to a smaller diameter, thereby providing a preform having, at the end of the portion of the tube, a tapered, relatively small diameter region of material that has substantially no crystallization or molecular orientation. In preferred embodiments a tapered region is provided at both ends of the portion in which the main body of the balloon is to be formed. Thereafter the tubular preform is heated to blowing temperature and, while heated, a balloon is formed by drawing and blowing the preform including the tapered regions. The balloon is mounted to form a balloon catheter device. A dilatation balloon catheter, is also described having wall thickness in the transition region less than 0.001 inch.

Device and method for heating tissue in a patient's body

A stent delivery system to facilitate introduction and placement of a stent, including a catheter having an expansible distal portion constructed and arranged for expanding the outer diameter of the catheter from a contracted state to an expanded state; a stent positioned around the distal portion of the catheter, having a contracted condition and being expansible to an expanded condition, and being sized in the contracted condition to closely surround the catheter in the contracted state, the stent having an end portion defining a margin lying over the expansible portion of the catheter; a sleeve in the region of the distal portion of the catheter positioned around the catheter having a first end fixed to the catheter and a second end defining a margin lying over the margin of the stent; the sleeve fixing the end of the stent on the catheter when the catheter is in the contracted state, the catheter and stent cooperatively constructed and arranged to cause expansion of the catheter from its contracted state to its expanded state to cause expansion of the stent, including the margin of the stent, from its contracted condition to its expanded condition, and therewith cause the margin of the sleeve to slide axially from over the margin of the stent thereby releasing the end of the stent from the catheter.

Stent delivery system

Dilation balloon devices that employ a metal tube for introduction of inflation fluid from distal end into a balloon have special features that enable introduction through very small passages. A distal core wire is shown forming part of a guide wire extending into the distal end of the tube. The core wire is fixed at the distal end of the tube, and has a proximal extension bridging across a fluid opening formed in the wall of the tube. The wire extension serves to transfer stress from the distal end of the device, across the fluid opening, to adjacent proximal portions of the tube, to prevent stress build-up at the opening that might lead to fracture of the tube during bending. In various embodiments, the device includes a bushing seal at the distal end of the balloon; a helical coil surrounds part or all of the length of the device, with strategic tapers along its length; a shrink tubing is used rather than a coil; and a pair of cross-wound multifilar coils are employed. A balloon having a very thin wall, even in its transition section, is formed from a specially prepared tubular preform.
