An IM rod has a proximal threaded portion that threads into the bone to increase the stability of the rod. The rod further includes an extended pointed tip for positive slip-free placement of the rod on the bone and an end cutting drill and reaming flutes for drilling a hole into and reaming the IM canal. Conformity between the shaft and the IM canal is increased to maximize stability by including a starter tip and drill as integral extensions of the shaft. Flutes extend up the rod beyond the drilling and reaming portion to allow decompression of the IM canal as the rod is inserted into the canal.

A pin puller has a receiving end which holds the head of a pin securely and a mechanism for multiplying a handle squeezing force. The squeezing force is redirected to axially pull the pin from a bone.

An orthopaedic assembly includes a first portion or an acetabular cup and a second connecting portion or a cup inserter. The acetabular cup includes a cavity for receiving a femoral head and a pole defining a longitudinal axis through the cavity. The acetabular cup further includes an annular face which bounds the cavity and has a plurality of notches extending therein. Each notch includes an undercut wall. The annular face further includes a projection receiving device. A cup inserter includes a body with an end face and a plurality of fingers extending from the end face. Each finger is insertable into a corresponding one of the notches in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis and is rotatable around the longitudinal axis to a locking position. Each finger includes a transverse surface which matingly engages with a corresponding one of the undercut walls when the finger is in the locking position. The cup inserter further includes a projection and a biasing device. The projection is slidably carried within the body and is movable between a retracted position and an extended position. The biasing device biases the projection toward the extended position. The projection is biased to the extended position and received within the projection receiving device of the cup when each finger is in the locking position.

Orthopaedic assembly including an acetabular cup and cup inserter

A prosthetic gripping instrument 10 for inserting or removing an orthopaedic product 1. The instrument 10 has a first gripping jaw 20 which is pivotally attached and a second gripping jaw 30 which is swivelably attached. This allows the instrument 10 to be used with a wide variety of orthopaedic products having varying geometries, such as various styles of hip stem implants or other surgical products.

Prosthetic gripping instrument

A tibial resector guide having an angularly adjustable head controlled by a thumb actuated slide mechanism. The head may be positioned in a plurality of predetermined angular orientations in the anterior-posterior plane. The cutting head guide includes angled side walls which permit the guide to have a narrow aperture yet allow the saw blade to completely pass through the tibia. Further, the tibial resector of this invention includes a telescoping rod and a length adjustment mechanism adjacent the head for providing small height adjustments for positioning the head. The length adjustment member includes an enlarged thumb wheel to ease operation. A pinning platform is connected to the adjustment member such that it is shiftable with the adjustment member relative to the guide head. The pinning platform permits the surgeon to pin the upper end of the instrument to the patient's leg preventing movement of the instrument during resection. After pinning, the head may be further adjusted in height by rotating the adjustment member. The instrument further includes a sliding ankle adjustment to provide proper alignment of the guide with the tibia and femur.

Tibial resector guide

The acetabular cup positioner of this invention provides a resilient collar to be carried on its distal end for contacting the interior surface of the acetabular cup. The resilient collar prevents damage to the interior of the cup during impaction. Since the resilient collar will compress a small amount during the impaction, the threaded connector of the positioner and the threads for the acetabular cup will be under a sizable load. Therefore, to protect the positioner and the cup, the threaded connector is shiftably connected to the positioner body. The connector is biased toward the distal end by a helical spring.
