An x-ray tube target composed of a molybdenum alloy material such as TZM is coated with a mixture containing from 40 percent to 70 percent of TiO.sub.2 with the remaining material being a stabilized oxide. The coating is then fused to a smooth, glossy condition to provide an enhanced thermal-emittance surface that adheres well to the target substrate.

Emissive coating on alloy x-ray tube target

An improved rotating anode x-ray tube having front and rear bearings supporting a tubular member attached to the rotating anode for rotation about a stationary stem member. The front bearing is modified by providing clearance between its retainer and the tubular member to reduce the amount of heat conducted through the bearing. The rear bearing is conventional, and thus has good electrical and thermal conductivity. As a result, heat conducted from the anode to the tubular member is preferentially directed to the stem member through the rear bearing, rather than through the front bearing. The front bearing, normally the hotter of the two, thus remains cooler, increasing its life substantially.

Outer rotation bearing for x-ray tube

The glass envelope of a rotating anode x-ray tube has a tubular stem sealed into it. A rotor shaft which supports the x-ray target and induction rotor is coaxial with the tubular stem. The front ball bearing for the shaft has its outer race fixed in the end of the tubular stem and its inner race fixed on the shaft. The rear bearing has its inner race fixed on the shaft and its outer race fixed in a bearing retainer sleeve which is axially yieldable in the tubular stem. A coil spring is interposed between one end of the stem and the bearing retainer sleeve to force the outer race, balls and inner race of the bearings into good electric current exchange contact during rotor operation and to accommodate thermal expansion.

Preloaded bearing assembly for rotating anode X-ray tubes

A low thermally conductive columbium metal stem has a heavy refractory metal x-ray target disk fastened to one end. A high thermal conductivity rotor hub comprising a cup-shaped element is fastened to the other end of the stem and the rotor hub is fastened to the end of an induction motor cylinder or liner which is coated to enhance heat emission and is induced to rotate by being coupled to a rotating magnetic field. A low thermally conductive bearing hub is fastened to the inside of the rotor hub and to a shaft which is journaled for rotation in bearings. The bearing hub enhances thermal isolation of the bearings from the hot rotor hub and hot target.

Rotating anode X-ray tube with improved thermal capacity

An anode assembly for a stationary anode x-ray tube wherein a tungsten target insert and an anode supporting metal sleeve are brazed simultaneously to the anode body. An axially tapered metal ferrule having a larger diameter than the sleeve is sealed into the end of a cylindrical glass envelope and the sleeve is inserted concentrically into the smaller end of the ferrule. The joint at the coterminous outside ends of the sleeve and ferrule is welded so as to seal and support the anode assembly in the tube envelope.

Method of making stationary anode x-ray tube with brazed anode assembly

A high thermal emittance coating for an X-ray tube anode target comprises a high melting point oxide or a mixture of such oxides added to titanium dioxide and another oxide selected from the group consisting of calcium oxide and yttrium oxide.
