A mailer type business form and intermediate are constructed from a single sheet of paper to include a reply envelope. The sheet is devoid of cut outs or windows, yet may be simplex printed with the reply and outgoing addresses formed on the same face of the intermediate and having the same orientation. The mailer is easily opened by removing tear strips along the edges, a data panel is detached from a reply envelope flap, and a ply containing the outgoing address detached from the reply envelope so that no computer printing or postal service bar code pertaining to the outgoing address is visible on the reply envelope, including the closing flap portion of the reply envelope.

An intermediate, and mailer formed from it, utilize a single sheet to form at least one reply envelope. The sheet is eccentrically C-folded, and preferably two reply envelopes are formed between first and third plies of the mailer. A third reply envelope also can be formed from a second ply of the mailer by a quadrate panel adhesively secured to the bottom face of the second ply. Lines of weakness, such as perforations, allow ready detachment of the sealed edges of the mailer, and separation of the reply envelopes from each other.

An envelope comprising a sheet of paper or the like which is folded along one foldine and then folded along a second foldline perpendicular to the first line to provide an envelope with an address viewable through a window but wherein an insert in the envelope cannot move to and obscure the view of the address through the window. One embodiment includes a return envelope made up of a portion of the aforesaid sheet and a second sheet which overlies said portion of the first sheet. Another embodiment provides a mailer without a viewing window and which is formed from a single ply foldable about orthogonally related foldlines and heat sealable along its edges to form a four-ply mailer.

Mailer

An envelope comprising a sheet of paper or the like which is folded along one foldline and then folded along a second foldline perpendicular to the first line to provide an envelope with an address viewable through a window but wherein an insert in the envelope cannot move to and obscure the view of the address through the window. One embodiment includes a return envelope made up of a portion of the aforesaid sheet and a second sheet which overlies said portion of the first sheet. Another embodiment provides a mailer without a viewing window and which is formed from a single ply foldable about orthogonally related foldlines and heat sealable along its edges to form a four-ply mailer.

A method is practiced to provide an outgoing mailer, parts of which are used to provide a return envelope. A feature of particular interest is that both the face and the back of the return envelope and face of the outgoing envelope are formed from the same web of paper. The article in its outgoing form has a top or face web with a window near its lower right corner, through which a variable address is viewed. A return address may be provided at the upper left corner, and postage at the upper right corner. Under the top face an intermediate web portion exists, which is an extension of the top web folded back nearer its own left edge and doubled against a corresponding segment of the top face. The intermediate web portion is of limited length, so that it does not cover the window. Finally, a bottom web underlies the top face and intermediate web portion, and is of length equal to the top web. The variable address is placed on the bottom web in position to be viewed through the window. Rows of dots of adhesive are placed along the top and bottom edges of the rear surfaces of the top web to hold the intermediate web portion and bottom web to the face portion of the top web. Various perfed lines of weakness exist in the two webs. When the original mailer is received by the addressee (e.g. 'John M. Jones') he/she opens it by tearing off the end areas along vertical perf lines, and then peeling the top web from the bottom web (the dots of adhesive above and below the window area release for this purpose). The user is then left with a return envelope (from which he or she will detach the vestigial windowed section of the top face) and the now separate bottom web. The face and rear of the return envelope are held together by a glue line extending around the margins of the return envelope other than the open edge. A rewettable glue flap is provided on the intermediate web for closing the return envelope. The address of the party to receive the return envelope is printed on the back of the intermediate web portion. This will also leave the same address (e.g. 'Moore Business Forms') in an upper corner on the back of the return envelope (if it was on the outgoing envelope).

A bifolded mailer is provided with head and foot panels which are individually shorter than its middle panel but collectively longer than its middle panel. The middle panel is provided with a window flap which remains joined along its lower margin. For variably printing the mailer on one face, the window flap is first folded down so that its outer face is exposed on the inner face of the mailer. After variable printing is applied, the form is processed foot first, in the source of which the window flap is folded back up and patched in place, the head panel is folded up and an insert body is deposited in the resulting trough, the foot panel is folded down, and adhesive bands, which have been applied to various marginal regions of the mailer panels, are activated, for instance by heated platens, creating seals at the left and right ends and in the lap between the head and foot on the outside rear of the mailer. Opening the mailer is accomplished by tearing off marginal strips at the ends, and by pulling across another tear strip located in an external panel.

A two-part mailer incorporates a conventional return envelope thereinto. The return envelope is affixed to a back side of a first web part that is subsequently heat-sealed to a second web part to form a two-part mailer. The method of assembly has a step in which the return envelope is affixed to the back side of the first web part in such a manner that the return envelope will not interfere with a glassing patch and/or die-cut area in the first web part nor interfere with removal perforations along the web part nor cause excessive bulk in areas where the first web part is heat-sealed to the second web part to form the two-part mailer.

The recipient of a mailer, following pre-printed instructions, severs a marginal portion in order to separate a cover sheet, through a window of which the initial mail-to address label was visible, from a return envelope which, except for the initial mail-to address, has an upside-down orientation relative to the mailer. The recipient then turns the return envelope right-side-up which places the initial mail-to address in the upper left hand corner, upside down, as a from address, and places the return mail-to address (which was formerly hidden, in an inverted orientation, by the cover sheet, right-side-up in a customary position. The recipient then detaches a remittance document from the separated cover sheet and places it in the return envelope, e.g. together with a bank check or other form of payment, seals the return envelope and mails it back.

The recipient then detaches a remittance document from the separated cover sheet and places it in the return envelope, e.g. together with a bank check or other form of payment, seals the return envelope and peels off the initial mail-to address label, thus exposing the pre-printed return mail to address. The peeled-off label is to be re-applied up in the upper left corner sender's return address position. The initial mail-to address label and the underlying return mail to address may be provided on the respective layers of a so-called piggyback label.
