Aspects of the disclosure are directed to acquiring aligned geographic coordinates of a vertical position. In one aspect, a vertical navigation system includes a light source to generate a source beam; a beam splitter to generate a first and a second source references derived from the source beam; a hollow retroreflector to produce a first and a second vertical references derived from the first and the second source references; an attitude sensor to capture a plurality of reference stars and to measure a first set of angles for the first vertical reference and a second set of angles for the second vertical reference, the first set of angles and the second set of angles are relative to the plurality of reference stars; and a processor to produce the aligned geographical coordinates using the first set of angles, the second set of angles, a gravity vector measurement and a time signal.

Vertical navigation system

An interferometric tracking device including: an optical cascade comprising a plurality of image dividers, each of the image dividers splitting incident light into a plurality of non-parallel orthogonally polarized beams, the plurality of image dividers including: an incident image divider receiving light into the optical cascade; one or more intermediary image dividers optically coupled to the incident image divider; and one or more exit image dividers, each exit image divider optically coupled to one of the intermediary image dividers; a plurality of pairs of shearing interferometers, each pair of the shearing interferometers being optically coupled between optically adjacent image dividers in the optical cascade; and one or more focal plane arrays, the orthogonally polarized beams from the one or more exit image dividers being imaged onto the one or more focal plane arrays.

Two-axis interferometric tracking utilizing pairs of shearing interferometers

A beam directing device includes a transmissive element having an entry surface disposed in a first plane and an exit surface disposed in a second plane, the first and second planes intersecting to form a wedge angle. A first coating on the entry surface transmits a predetermined spectrum of light incident upon the first coating from external to the transmissive element at a normal angle of incidence and reflects the predetermined spectrum of light incident on the first coating from within the transmissive element at two times the wedge angle. A second coating on the exit surface reflects the predetermined spectrum of light incident on the second coating from within the transmissive element at the wedge angle and transmits the predetermined spectrum of light incident on the second coating from within the transmissive element at three times the wedge angle.

Beam directing device

An interferometric tracking device includes image dividers arranged to form an optical cascade, with one of the image dividers being an incident image divider for the optical cascade and one or more of the image dividers being one or more exit image dividers for the optical cascade. Each of the image dividers splits incident light into a plurality of non-parallel orthogonally polarized beams, the beams from the incident image divider cascading through the other image dividers in the cascade. One of a plurality of shearing interferometers is optically coupled between optically adjacent image dividers in the cascade. The orthogonally polarized beams from the one or more exit image dividers are imaged onto one or more focal plane arrays.

Two axis interferometer tracking device and method

A bidirectional beam director includes a pair of optically coupled diffraction gratings, each being independently rotatable so that a laser beam passing through the pair of gratings can be steered by rotation of at least one of the gratings. The bidirectional beam can be coupled to many types of optical systems, including optical phased arrays, multi-beam laser transmitters and receivers, telescopes, and high energy laser beam control systems.

A high energy semiconductor laser capable of high optical efficiency includes a master oscillator coupled to a plurality of slave oscillators, each producing a laser beam that is substantially at the same wavelength as the output beam from the master oscillator. The outputs of the slave oscillators are then coherently combined to a single monochromatic beam having an optical power which is substantially greater than that of beam output from the master oscillator. The slave oscillators can be configured as ring resonators. A suitable ring oscillator can be built by arranging one or more semiconductor diode laser gain media, two or more reflecting mirrors, and at least one semireflective mirror in a ring configuration. A suitable ring oscillator can also be built by machining a solid block to include one or more semiconductor diode laser high gain regions.

High energy semiconductor laser

A multi-beam laser beam control and imaging system includes a laser transmitter configured to emit light in a plurality of beamlets towards a target. At least one of the beamlets illuminates the whole target or a substantial portion of the target when imaging the target. A sensor is configured to receive light from the beamlets. A processor is communicably coupled to the sensor and configured to compute a relative phase of a wavefront of at least one beamlet based on output from the sensor. The processor also reconstructs a wavefront which is used to formulate two or three dimensional images of the target. A controller is communicably coupled to the processor and to the laser transmitter. The controller is configured to adjust a phase of at least one of the beamlets.

An active imaging system includes a laser transmitter configured to emit light in a plurality of beamlets. A sensor is configured to receive light from the beamlets. A processor is communicably coupled to the sensor and configured to compute images of objects illuminated by the beamlets.

A multi-beam laser beam control system includes a laser transmitter configured to emit light in a plurality of beamlets. A sensor is configured to receive light from the beamlets. A processor is communicably coupled to the sensor and configured to compute a relative phase of a wavefront of at least one beamlet based on output from the sensor. A controller is communicably coupled to the processor and to the laser transmitter. The controller is configured to adjust a phase of at least one of the beamlets.

Multi-beam laser control system and method

A laser beam control system includes an output aperture through which a laser beam is directed toward a target. A laser beam return is also received through the output aperture, with the laser beam return including scatter from the laser beam. A deformable mirror is adapted to control the outgoing laser beam, and a sensor is adapted to detect the wavefront of the laser beam return. An optics controller is operationally coupled to the deformable mirror and is adapted to adjust the deformable mirror in response to the wavefront of the laser beam return.

Laser beam control system and method

A deformable mirror includes a plurality of block segments and at least one actuator. The block segments are arranged in an array, with adjacent block segments being coupled together by an elastomer and the top surface of the array being reflective. The at least one actuator is coupled to at least one of the block segments at the bottom surface of the array and is adapted to adjust in piston.

An interferometric tracking device is disclosed. A first grating is optically coupled to a second grading such that the second grating is rotationally offset from the first grating. Imaging optics are adapted to image light passing through the first and second gratings onto a focal plane array. A plurality of wedge plates are optically disposed between the imaging optics and the second grating, such that the wedge plates generate a plurality of spots on the FPA when light from a point source is incident upon the first grating.

Interferometric tracking device

A system for tracking eye movement is disclosed. A first light source, emitting light including a first wavelength, is adapted to illuminate corneal tissue of an eye. The first wavelength is selected such that it is strongly absorbed by corneal tissue. A position sensitive detector is adapted to detect a reflection of light at the first wavelength off the corneal tissue. Signal may be generated in response to the detected reflection which are representative of the position of the reflection, and therefore the position of the corneal tissue, with respect to the position sensitive detector.

System and method for tracking eye movement

A birefringent spectral filter comprises a first birefringent stage and a polarizing beam splitter optically coupled to the first birefringent stage. The first birefringent stage is adapted to generate an optical path difference between light propagating along each of two orthogonal axes. This configuration is most advantageous when light incident on the first birefringent stage is polarized at 45&#xb0; relative to the extraordinary axis of the birefringent material. The first birefringent stage may advantageously include a first and second layers of birefringent material and a half-wave plate disposed therebetween. Preferably, the first and second layers of birefringent material have orthogonally aligned extraordinary axes.
