Handheld ultrasound devices with display-retaining designs that allow the processor/display assembly to be removed and/or repositioned are provided. According to one embodiment, a handheld ultrasound scanning device includes a main body housing having a first side and a second side. An ultrasound transducer is coupled to the second side and is configured to obtain ultrasound data. A communication interface is communicatively coupled to the ultrasound transducer and configured to transmit the ultrasound data obtained by the ultrasound transducer to a processor and display assembly. The first side of the main body housing includes a retention feature that is configured to retain the processor and display assembly in contact with the main body housing at a position and orientation relative to the main body housing.

A method for adaptive filtering of clutter from a sample stream having a blood signal component and a clutter signal component comprises the steps of (a) estimating a signal strength of the sample stream, and (b) determining an order of a filter based on a relationship between the signal strength estimate and a signal strength threshold. The filter receives the sample stream and provides an output stream having a reduced level of the clutter signal component relative to the blood signal component.

An ultrasound transducer assembly includes an acoustic mirror, an ultrasound transducer positioned to direct a scanned ultrasound beam at the acoustic mirror, wherein the scanned ultrasound beam is reflected by the acoustic mirror to form a reflected ultrasound beam, and an actuating device for moving the acoustic mirror relative to the scanned ultrasound beam so that the reflected ultrasound beam scans a three-dimensional volume. An ultrasound matching fluid may be disposed between the ultrasound transducer and the acoustic mirror. The actuating device may be configured for rotating the acoustic mirror, translating the acoustic mirror or rotating and translating the acoustic mirror. The acoustic mirror may have a single acoustically-reflecting surface of may be a polygon having a plurality of acoustically-reflective surfaces.

Disclosed is a system and method for generating two dimensional renderings on a display device of acoustic volumetric data that provides depth perception to the user. The system includes an acoustic data acquisition circuit, which includes a sonic transducer and other components, that generates and stores an acoustic data set from medium such as a human body, etc. A scan converter generates a perspective volumetric data set of the medium based upon the acoustic data set, and a single dimensional interpolator that generates at least one interpolated data set from the perspective volumetric data set. The perspective volumetric and interpolated data sets are processed by a compositor that generates two dimensional renderings of the perspective volumetric data set and the interpolated data sets. The system includes a display device which displays the two dimensional renderings in a predetermined fashion to provide depth perception to the viewer.

System and method for providing depth perception using single dimension interpolation

An ultrasound flow measurement system converts each of plural groups of reflection sample values from scatterers, into baseband complex data values and enables a velocity determination from just two lag samples. A cross correlation function derives a first cross-correlation value between a first set of complex data values that are derived at a first common sample time, during succeeding transmit events, and a second set of complex data values that are derived at a second common sample time, during succeeding transmit events. A second cross-correlation function derives a second cross-correlation value between the first set of complex data values and a third set of complex data values that are derived at the common second sample time. A local oscillator synchronizes both the baseband conversion and cross-correlation operation, and exhibits a rate of change of phase per sample time. A processor relates the rate of change of phase of the local oscillation signal, the first cross-correlation value and the second cross-correlation value to derive the velocity of the ultrasound scatterers. In particular, the first and second cross-correlation values enable establishment of a linear function defining the phase of the cross-correlation function of the complex data values. The rate of change of phase of the local oscillation signal enables establishment of a further linear function. The intersection of the two linear functions identifies the time at which a maxima occurs of the cross-correlation function, thereby enabling derivation of the velocity of the scatterers.
