A system and method for improved voice and data communication is described. One embodiment includes a method for data communication with an end user, the method comprising connecting to an agent device; receiving a data session request from the agent device, wherein the data session request comprises a target telephone number; establishing a data session with an end-user device associated with the target telephone number; and transmitting data messages between the end-user device and the agent device using the data session.

A system and method for improved voice and data communication is described. One embodiment includes a method for voice and data communication, the method comprising connecting to a session server; receiving a voice call from an end-user; receiving an end-user phone number for the end-user; transmitting a session request to the session server, wherein the session request is based on the end-user phone number; and communicating with the end-user over a session established through the session server.

A telecommunication system provides voice and data communications over a conventional telephone line between a server station and a client station using visual forms. The client station includes a processor, display, telephone, and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) for data communications. The server station includes a processor, DCE, and either a telephone or a voice card for audio communications. Each DCE includes a modem, a start signal generator for transmitting a start signal over the telephone line prior to transmission of data by the modem, a start signal detector, and a switch that automatically switches the DCE from voice mode to data mode while data is being communicated. The client processor also includes a definition of a visual form having a number of controls with predetermined properties, including properties defining permissible actions that can be taken with respect to each control and instructions to be executed in response to specified actions. The client employs a mouse, keyboard, or the like to select a control in the visual form and to perform an action on the selected control. At least some of the controls include a property directing the client processor to switch the DCE to data mode, transmit data identifying the action, and then return to voice mode. The server processor is programmed to execute steps in response to the actions received from said client station. The visual forms at both stations can be linked so that they are automatically updated to reflect actions at the other station.

A telecommunication system provides voice and data communications over a conventional telephone line that can be dynamically switched from voice mode to any of a plurality of data modes (e.g., fax, modem, or VoiceView protocols) during a single conversation. Each station includes a telephone for voice communications and switching means for selectively connecting the telephone to the telephone line in voice mode and disconnecting the telephone while operating in one of the data modes. A modem provides data communications over the telephone line in any of a plurality of data modes. Voice is the default mode of operation. Prior to switching into a data mode, the originating station first transmits a start signal over the telephone line that includes a mode signal indicating one of the data modes. If a station detects a start signal transmitted by a remote station, a controller directs the switching means and modem to automatically switch from voice mode to the selected data mode in preparation for receiving data from the originating station. The stations also can also query one another to exchange information on their respective capabilities.

Telecommunication system for automatic switching between voice and data

A telephone interface system is inserted between the telephone handset and base to provide automatic switching between voice and data modes of communication. The interface includes a modem having a receive port coupled to the telephone base speaker lines and a transmit port switchably coupled to the base microphone lines, a switch for selectively coupling the telephone handset to the base, and a processor for monitoring data received by the modem and controlling the switch to automatically decouple the telephone handset from the base when data is being received or transmitted by the modem. The modem includes a tone generator that generates a predetermined start signal to signal a remote unit at the other end of the communication link to enter data mode prior to transmission of data. Similarly, the modem includes a tone detector to detect a start signal sent by the remote unit that causes the unit to switch into data mode in preparation for receiving data. The start signal can also include signals designating the rate at which data will be transmitted and its format.

A telecommunication system provides voice and data communications over a conventional telephone line that can be dynamically switched from voice mode to data mode during a single conversation. Each station includes a telephone for voice communications and bypass relay means for selectively connecting the telephone to the telephone line in voice mode and disconnecting the telephone while operating in data mode. Prior to transmitting data, the originating station first transmits a start signal over the telephone line that includes a rate signal indicating one of the several possible data transmission rates. If a station detects a start signal transmitted by a remote station, a microcontroller directs the bypass relay means and modem to automatically switch from voice mode to data mode in preparation for receiving data from the originating station.

Telecommunication display system

Existing voice telephone communications are augmented in a simple and understandable way by the addition of a 'dumb' display terminal at a subscriber's location. Text, graphics, and picture data can be transmitted in ASCII code or other protocol, over existing, standard telephone lines and displayed on the terminal. The 'dumb' feature is due to the display terminal having a voice/data selector that can automatically recognize digital data and switch from voice communication to data communication modes. Accordingly, this display terminal is entirely self contained and is controlled from a remote location, such as a telemarketing agents position, requiring nothing more from the subscriber than mere possession of the display terminal.

A call coverage arrangement in a telephone system. Any station served by the system may be assigned to a call coverage group as a principal station. A coverage group includes the identities of a plurality of call covering stations for the principal station and an indication of the order of preference of the covering stations. Call coverage criteria are stored for principal stations specifying circumstances under which calls intended for the principal stations are redirected to coverage. A covered call is redirected sequentially to each of the covering stations in a coverage group in the order of preference until the call is answered or abandoned. The coverage criteria include options based on both the state of a principal's station (active, busy, idle, etc.) and the class of an incoming call (internal, external, priority). Principal stations are equipped with a 'send all calls' button. The button may be operated while a call is arriving to redirect the call without waiting for automatic coverage to take effect. To give a caller control over the disposition of a call scheduled for coverage, the caller is alerted at the time a coverage criterion is satisified that the call is scheduled for coverage. Thereafter, a short time interval is provided during which the caller may abandon, activate the automatic generation and storage of a callback message or wait for the call to be redirected to coverage.

Call coverage arrangement

An arrangement in a telephone system providing for the handling of calls which have been automatically redirected to a call covering station in a customer premises telephone system. The covering station is equipped with one or more function buttons each for activating a different call processing function on a covered call at the covering station. The arrangement automatically identifies the intended principal station on a covered call and performs the necessary operations associated with an operation of one of the function buttons with respect to the principal station in question regardless of how many principal stations are covered by the covering station, thereby eliminating direct station selection (DSS) keyfields or the dialing of principal station numbers from the covering station.
