A method is provided for measuring an electrolytically-active species concentration in an aqueous or non-aqueous solution for use in providing control of the concentration of the species in a source solution thereof based on the measurements. In the method, a sample containing an electrolytically-active species is added into a measurement cell that has a working electrode and an auxiliary electrode, and a constant current is applied to the measurement cell while the working and auxiliary electrodes are in contact with the sample with monitoring of voltage difference across the electrodes until a change in the voltage difference is detected. A feedback signal is generated based on a parameter of the change in the voltage difference that is directly proportional to the amount of the electrolytically-active species in the sample, which can be used for process control. An apparatus is also described.

Method and apparatus for measuring and controlling electrolytically-active species concentration in aqueous solutions

A method of controlling an exothermic or endothermic chemical reaction is provided. The method involves measuring a temperature of a first reactant flowing at a first flow rate, contacting the first reactant with a second reactant flowing at a second flow rate to form a reaction product, measuring the temperature of the reaction product, and determining the temperature difference between the temperature of the first reactant and the temperature of the reaction product. The method can further involve adjusting the flow rate of at least one of the first reactant and the second reactant, or shutting down flow, based on the temperature difference. An apparatus to carry out the method is also provided. The method and apparatus can be useful in controlling many different reactions, including the reaction of sodium hypochlorite and ammonia to form monochloramine.

Method and apparatus for monitoring and controlling exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions

A method and composition is described for controlling the growth of fouling materials, such as scale, in aqueous systems using a tagged (fluorescent) polymer. The tagged polymer can be a fluorescent polymer which has at least one fluorescent monomeric unit derived from a fluorophore which has at least one terminal end comprising an olefinic group. The method of controlling the growth of at least one fouling material in an aqueous system can include the steps of adding the tagged polymer to the aqueous system to be treated, fluorometrically monitoring the concentration of the tagged polymer, and adjusting, as needed, the concentration of the tagged polymer and proportionally used water treatment compound or compounds effective to control the growth of at least one fouling material. The adjustment of pH before determination of the fluorescence signal can be employed to increase sensitivity of the fluorophore and minimize background interference.

Tagged polymers, water treatment compositions, and methods of their use in aqueous systems

The present invention provides a method of treating an aqueous system for biocide control, by adding an acidified solution that includes monoalkyldithiocarbamate salt and alkyl isothiocyanate to an aqueous system. A biocide feed system is also provided that is configured to generate a reproducible level of alkyl isothiocyanate. The method and system provide effective levels of alkyl isothiocyanate for rapid biocidal activity, along with levels of monoalkyldithiocarbamate salt which can decompose to form additional alkyl isothiocyanate and provide longer-term biocidal activity.

Methods for controlling the growth of bacteria in ethanol fermentation systems with antibiotic alternatives, which can be nonoxidizing biocides, stabilized oxidizers, or any combinations thereof, are described. As an option, a process or composition of the present invention can include one or more polycyclic antibacterial peptides. The methods can provide improvements, such as increased ethanol yields with minimal carryover of biocide into co-products of the processes.

A biofouling monitor is described which has a column having an inlet and an outlet; a microorganism nutrient feed line located upstream of the inlet; and a first pressure sensor located upstream of the inlet for measuring flow pressure and a second pressure system located downstream of the outlet for measuring flow pressure. Also described is a biofouling monitor which further has a recirculation system and optionally inert packing material located in the column. A method to monitor or detect biofouling ahead of time in an aqueous system is further described.

Biofouling monitor and methods to monitor or detect biofouling

The invention provides a solid TCMTB formulation for controlling the growth of at least one microorganism. The use of a solid TCMTB formulation, as compared to a liquid, minimizes user contact and is more readily packaged. A solid TCMTB formulation of the invention contains TCMTB adsorbed onto a water-soluble, salt carrier matrix, with the TCMTB present in an amount effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism, preferably in an aqueous system. Other microbicides and additives may also be incorporated into a solid TCMTB formulation of the invention. In a preferred embodiment, the formulation contains both TCMTB and one or more other microbicides (e.g., methylene bisthiocyanate (MTC)) and a water-soluble, salt carrier matrix. The TCMTB is adsorbed onto the water-soluble salt carrier matrix. The TCMTB and other microbicide are present in a combined antimicrobial amount effective for the control of at least one microorganism. A solid TCMTB formulation may be used in a wide variety of biocide applications. Accordingly, the invention also relates to a method for controlling the growth of at least one microorganism in a liquid, preferably aqueous, system. In particular, the method controls the growth of at least one microorganism in an aqueous system by contacting an aqueous system with a solid TCMTB formulation comprising TCMTB adsorbed onto a water-soluble salt carrier matrix in an amount effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism in the aqueous system.

Solid TCMTB formulations

A composition for minimizing biological and/or colloidal fouling is described, which includes an anionic antiscalant and a cationically charged biocide. Further, a method of controlling fouling is described and achieved by introducing a formulation of the present invention into an aqueous system which uses a separation membrane. The compositions used in the present invention are compatible with such separation systems and preferably prevent membrane fouling.

Method and compositions for minimizing biological and colloidal fouling

Novel analogs of phencyclidine (PCP) are disclosed. The analogs are capable of reacting with anti-PCT antibodies and are useful in immunoassays. The following analogs are described: ##STR1## wherein wherein X is --OH or a reporter molecule selected from the group consisting of aminofluorescein and aminomethylfluorescein and n is an integer between 1 and 10, inclusive.

Phencyclidine analogs for immunoassay

The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an ionene polymer and a salt of dodecylamine in a combined amount effective to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an ionene polymer and a salt of dodecylamine in a combined amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the fouling organisms. The present invention also relates to compositions containing an ionene polymer and a salt of dodecylamine and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise an ionene polymer and a salt of dodecylamine in a combined amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

Methods and compositions for controlling biofouling using combinations

An improved method and apparatus are provided for dispensing fluids under pressure by means of an expandable resilient bladder, wherein the bladder expands upon filling with a fluid, and the resilient character of the expanded bladder provides the pressure for expelling the fluid. The improved method comprises mechanically tensioning the bladder as the bladder is being filled with fluid, and maintaining the mechanical tensioning of the bladder at least until substantially all of the fluid is expelled therefrom. This mechanical tensioning provides a substantially uniform high pressure on the fluid throughout the dispensing of the fluid, and substantially all of the fluid may be dispensed from the apparatus. The improved apparatus for carrying out this mechanical tensioning may advantageously comprise relatively rigid telescoping members located interior of the bladder. The telescoping members are actuated by the fluid as it is being introduced into the apparatus such that the telescoping members are moved to an extended position which longitudinally tensions the bladder. Suitable means are provided for detaining the telescoping members in the extended position at least until substantially all of the fluid is dispensed from the apparatus.
