A three-member compound sealing means having a central elastomeric O-ring actuating plastic surrounding members on both sides. Primary seals are formed by the plastic members. These seals lie on both sides of the secondary seals formed by the elastomeric O-ring, thus protecting the O-ring from the corrosive effects of chemicals.

Sealing means with central elastomeric member

A coupling apparatus having a male member and a female member. The male member includes a flow passage having radially extending ports and a valve means. The female member includes a body member having an interior surface and a flow passage, a socket member having an exterior surface and a flow passage, and, an insert member having a first complementary surface and a second complementary surface. The valve means of said male member allows communication between said radially extending ports and said flow passage of said socket member. The interior surface of said body member is engaged in sliding contact with said first complementary surface of said insert member thus permitting universal movement of said insert member relative to said body member. The exterior surface of said socket member is engaged in sliding contact with the second complementary surface of said insert member thus permitting radial movement of said socket member relative to said insert member. The radial movement of said socket member and the universal movement of said socket member, in combination, absorb angular and radial misalignment of said male member and said female member during engagement.

Coupling apparatus

A self sealing fluid coupling utilizing separable interconnectable fittings wherein valve structure within one of the fittings simultaneously functions as the associated self sealing valve and as a pressure relief valve adapted to open and relieve excessive internal fluid pressure when the fitting is uncoupled. The combination self sealing and relief valve comprises an axially slidable sleeve including a radial surface exposed to internal fluid pressures for producing axial forces on the sleeve which are counteracted by a spring.

Self sealing coupling with full flow relief valve

A valved fluid coupling having tubular halves interconnected by frangible means. Each half includes a self-closing valve located in its passage and the valves are maintained in an open position by supports and retainers which sense the coupling connected state. Upon fracture of the connection means the halves separate permitting the valve retainers to release the valves closing the body passages. The frangible connection means takes the form of a rib formed upon one half overlapped by a projection defined on the other half having a retainer engaging the rib. Axial forces of a predetermined value on the halves cause the rib to fracture. Also, frangible means are disclosed for permitting valve half separation under radial shear forces and a sealing boot may be used to minimize fluid loss upon coupling disengagement.

Frangible valved fitting

A coupling for handling liquids, gases, or a combination thereof characterized by its ability to convey high volumes with low flow resistance through valve elements. The coupling includes a pair of clam shell type valve elements pivotal between closed and open positions by the nose of the male coupling half during coupling of the halves and recesses defined in the valve elements receive the coupling nose so that the engagement between valve elements and coupling nose does not produce a flow restriction. The valve elements are provided with bonded resilient sealing edges and include a homogeneous bumper for absorbing shocks during coupling. A double action latch system is also disclosed having a sequence of operation which significantly reduces the likelihood of inadvertently uncoupling the coupling halves.

Full flow valved fitting

A liquid handling system for filling tanks, such as tank trucks, particularly suitable for handling volatile fluids, employing a fill conduit and an emergency shutoff valve located at the upper end of the fill conduit. The emergency valve employs an annular, normally open, valve element axially displaceable to a shutoff position upon the liquid level within the tank reaching a predetermined maximum depth. Valve element operation is regulated by a control piston subjected to subatmospheric pressures produced by liquid flow through the valve and upon the liquid level reaching a predetermined depth the control piston is actuated to cause the valve element to terminate fluid flow. The emergency shutoff valve may be employed in conjunction with a variable rate flow valve connected in series therewith to produce a versatile tank filling system.
