A system and method used to predict the state of health of a battery in a powertrain of a vehicle including a vehicle route profile generator arranged to generate a vehicle specific rout profile based on historical vehicle driving information, are disclosed. In one example, the system and method also include a powertrain model to convert the vehicle specific route profile to a predicted battery demand profile, and a state of health profile generator to generate a predicted state of health profile of the battery based on the predicted battery demand. In another example, the system further includes a vehicle performance manager arranged to generate a command to modify operation of the powertrain to extend battery life based on the vehicle specific route profile.

The control system is configured to generate a deceleration target for the vehicle in the regenerative braking mode, and to generate a torque command for the traction motor based on the deceleration target. By generating a deceleration target for the vehicle during regenerative braking and using the deceleration target to control the torque of the traction motor, more consistent regenerative braking may be provided, particularly when the vehicle is used to carry different loads.

The controller also determines a verification period and a derate reduction period based on the ambient or GPS information to reduce the sustained derate in response to detecting a lack of traction control event during the verification period at a rate determined by the derate reduction period.

An engine out NOx amount for at least one cylinder is determined at least in part in response to the exhaust manifold pressure measurement and a brake mean effective pressure of the at least one cylinder.
