A window assembly for transmitting light into and from a vessel containing a high pressure, high temperature, highly reactive environment includes a truncated conical window which is substantially transparent to radiation, a truncated conical metal seal which circumferentially engages the window, and a case to which the window and the seal are secured. To facilitate automatic cleaning of the window, the surface of the window which is exposed to the high-pressure environment is seated substantially flush with the high-pressure surface of the case. By initially seating the window assembly by means of mechanical pressing, then subjecting the window assembly to a series of successively higher transient combustion pressures, a window assembly can be fabricated which can withstand prolonged service in a harsh environment such as that encountered in a large caliber artillery cannon or equivalent scientific and industrial applications.

High pressure, high temperature window assembly and method of making the same

A method for confinement of a gun propellant during the initial stage of ignition provides the ignition by electrical, pyrotechnic, or laser irradiation means. A liquid and or a solid propellant is placed in a substantially closed chamber. A portion of the propellant in a conduit of the chamber exits from the chamber and is cooled in the exit conduit by a thermoelectric or cryogenic means to a sufficiently low temperature for producing a viscous, glassy, or substantially solidified condition to enhance the propellant containment. An ignition stimulus is then applied. A closure means in the exit conduit selectively varies the amount of flow whereby a relatively high temperature and pressure are reached from the chemical energy release of the propellant. Venting of the formed combustive products is provided through the exit conduit whereby sufficient thermal energy is generated to sustain combustion and to ignite the next stage.

Method of confinement of propellants for ignition

A method and system for the Multi-Point ignition of a propellant of an exsive material comprising the steps of: selecting an elongated optic fiber; attaching a suitable energetic material at several sites thereon, irradiating on end of the optic fiber so that light energy is transmitted through the optic fiber and exited at the site of the sensitive material to ignite the material.

Multi-point fiber optic igniter

A research type burner is provided which permits ready optical access for study of precombustion and primary reaction zones of adiabatic flames of premixed gases. The burner includes a channel for relatively laminar gas flow having an outlet with a pair of essentially parallel closely spaced knife edges for providing an essentially stable and adiabatic flame. The knife edges project sufficiently above the burner housing to allow the passage of a laser beam between the knife edges through the zone to be studied.
