A mixed extractant solvent that includes at least one dialkyloxycalix[4]arenebenzocrown-6 compound, 4',4&#x2032;,(5&#x2032;)-di-(t-butyldicyclohexano)-18-crown-6, at least one modifier, and, optionally, a diluent. The dialkyloxycalix[4]arenebenzocrown-6 compound is 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(octyloxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(decyloxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(dodecyloxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(2-ethylhexyl-1-oxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(3,7-dimethyloctyl-1-oxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, 1,3-alternate-25,27-di(4-butyloctyl-1-oxy)calix[4]arenebenzocrown-6, or combinations thereof. The modifier is a primary alcohol. A method of separating cesium and strontium from an aqueous feed is also disclosed, as are dialkyloxycalix[4]arenebenzocrown-6 compounds and an alcohol modifier.

A crown ether cesium ion extractant is disclosed as is its synthesis. The crown ether cesium ion extractant is useful for the selective purification of cesium ions from aqueous acidic media, and more particularly useful for the isolation of radioactive cesium-137 from nuclear waste streams. Processes for isolating cesium ions from aqueous acidic media using the crown ether cesium extractant are disclosed as are processes for recycling the crown ether cesium extractant and processes for recovering cesium from a crown ether cesium extractant solution.

Composition and process for separating cesium ions from an acidic

A process for preconcentrating and separating radium from a contaminated solution containing at least water and radium includes the steps of adding a quantity of a water-soluble macrocyclic polyether to the contaminated solution to form a combined solution. An acid is added to the combined solution to form an acidic combined solution having an �H.sup.+ ! concentration of about 0.5M. The acidic combined solution is contacted with a sulfonic acid-based strong acid cation exchange medium or a organophilic sulfonic acid medium having a plurality of binding sites thereon to bind the radium thereto and to form a radium-depleted solution. The radium-depleted solution is separated from the strong acid cation exchange medium or organophilic sulfonic acid medium. The radium remaining bound to the exchange medium or organophilic reagent is then stripped from the exchange medium or organophilic medium and the activity of the radium is measured.

Process for separation and preconcentration of radium from water

Anion exchange resins including at least two positively charged sites and a ell-defined spacing between the positive sites are provided together with a process of removing anions or anionic metal complexes from aqueous solutions by use of such resins. The resins can be substituted poly(vinylpyridine) and substituted polystyrene.

Ion exchange polymers for anion separations

A process for preparing 4,4'(5')-[di-t-butyldicyclohexano]-18-crown-6 containing an enhanced amount of an isomer that extracts strontium ions from aqueous solution is disclosed. According to the process, an anhydrous reaction mixture is prepared containing 4,4'(5')-[di-t-butyldibenzo]-18-crown-6 as substrate dissolved in a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alcohol-containing solvent that can also contain benzene, toluene or xylene, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 carboxylic acid or anhydride and a 5 percent of rhodium on alumina particle catalyst. The resulting reaction medium is hydrogenated at about 200-1000 psi, at a temperature of about 35.degree.-120.degree. C. for a time period sufficient to reduce at least 90 percent of the substrate.

Process for the preparation of cis-syn-cis-4,4'

There is provided a new class of crown ethers characterized by an --OH functional group attached to a carbon atom in the heterocyclic ether ring portion and derivatives thereof. A novel process for making such crown ethers is also provided which is characterized by reacting a bisphenol ether with an epihalohydrin to effect ring closure and provide the appendant --OH group. These products are especially useful as complexing agents.
