This invention relates to improved flexible laminates formed from at least one corona treated polyolefin or polyester film bonded to another polymeric or cellulosic film via an aqueous based laminating ink. The improvement in the flexible laminates resides in the aqueous based emulsion used to print and bond the respective films. The aqueous based emulsion is comprised of an acrylic interpolymer prepared by emulsion polymerizing alkyl(meth)acrylates, .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated olefins, such as styrene and suitably substituted styrenes, and/or .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated nitrites, such as acrylonitrile, with an amino(meth)acrylate, an amino (meth)acrylate or vinyl amine.

The invention relates to improved carboxylated styrenic polymers suited for use in the graphic arts industries as dispersants for pigments and varnishes. The base polymer comprises polymerized units of styrene and an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, with said polymer incorporating hydrophilic functionality. The improvement in the polymer composition comprises the polymerized incorporation of hydrophilic functionality based upon the half acid ester of an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof and a polyethylene glycol monoether having greater than three ethylene oxide units. The half ester not only provides surfactant properties to the polymer through the incorporation of the polyethylene glycol ether but also provides carboxyl functionality necessary for water dispersibility. The number average molecular weight is from 1,500 to 20,000 and the acid numbers for these polymers typically range from 125 to 300.

This invention pertains to aqueous emulsions containing water insoluble, vinyl polymer particles containing polymerized Michael adduct units of N-vinylformamide and to emulsions of vinyl acetate polymers containing said Michael adducts. These latex dispersions are prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a Michael adduct of N-vinylformamide, optionally with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g., vinyl acetate. An aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydroperoxide, an olefin such as a 1-aromatic-1-substituted ethylene and a halide corresponding to the ethylene are reacted under essentially anhydrous conditions, in the absence of a free acid, at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the halide to obtain a peroxide corresponding to the hydroperoxide and the ethylene. Preferably the product peroxide is recovered by treating the reaction product mixture with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to destroy the halide and hydroperoxide therein; then distilling the treated mixture in the presence of a substantial amount of liquid water at sub-atmospheric pressure to remove overhead impurities. Example: Dicumyl peroxide is prepared by reacting at about 30.degree. C. for about 5 hours cumene hydroperoxide, .alpha.-methylstyrene and cumyl chloride, which compounds has been charged to the reaction zone in a mole ratio of 1.25:0.86:0.14 and treating the reaction product mixture with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to remove cumyl chloride and cumene hydroperoxide to obtain a product mixture including dicumyl peroxide; and adding 2-10 parts of liquid water to the product mixture in a distillation zone and vaporizing water and impurities at a temperature of about 30.degree.-80.degree. C. at a pressure of about 0.01-0.5 atmospheres and continuing said vaporization until essentially no oily liquid is obtained in a condensor receiving vapors from said zone, under conditions such that a substantial amount of liquid water is present in said zone in contact with peroxide product.
