A compressor housing includes: an intake flow path-forming section configured to form an intake flow path; a shroud portion including a shroud surface curved in a protruding manner to face blades of an impeller; and a scroll flow path-forming section configured to form a scroll flow path through which gas is guided outside the compressor housing. A groove portion extending in a circumferential direction is defined in the shroud surface and, in a cross-sectional view taken along an axis of the impeller, the groove portion includes a downstream side wall surface, wherein a distance from the axis of the impeller to the downstream side wall surface increases toward an upstream side from a downstream side end portion of the groove portion, and an upstream side curved surface that is recessed between an upstream end of the downstream side wall surface and an upstream side end portion of the groove portion.

A turbine is provided with a turbine rotor blade, and a turbine housing having a scroll part extending along a circumferential direction of the turbine rotor blade. The scroll part is configured such that an A/R ratio of a flow passage area A to a distance R between an axis of the turbine rotor blade and a flow passage center of the scroll part has a concave distribution at least in a part of a graph where an abscissa represents a circumferential position around the axis of the turbine rotor blade and an ordinate represents the A/R ratio.

A centrifugal compressor is disclosed. The centrifugal compressor comprises an inlet and an impeller comprising a hub and blades. The inlet is for conveying flow to the impeller comprising guide means and is arranged to guide the flow through the inlet to induce swirl in the flow adjacent tips of the blades, the direction of swirl being the direction of rotation of the blades, without substantially disturbing flow adjacent the hub.

A variable flow-restricting turbine assembly for a turbocharger includes a housing, a turbine mounted for rotation in the housing, and a variable flow-restrictor. The variable flow-restrictor includes a first series of angularly-distributed flow-restrictor portions distributed around the turbine wheel and located in an exhaust flow path to the wheel, and a second series of angularly-distributed flow-restrictor portions distributed around the first series and located in the exhaust path. At least one of the first and second series is rotatable in the housing to vary the relative angular positions of the first and second series. The restrictor portions are arranged such that the first portions align with the second portions at each of a plurality of relative angular positions to open flow channels between the portions and such that they misalign between those positions to close the flow channels.

Variable flow-restricting turbine assembly for a turbocharger, corresponding turbocharger engine and vehicle, and operating method

An asymmetric double-entry turbine is provided with a turbine housing that includes a first volute, a second volute and a turbine receiving bore. The first volute has a first exhaust gas inlet and a first exhaust gas outlet. The second volute has a second exhaust gas inlet and a second exhaust gas outlet. The turbine receiving bore is in fluid communication with the first exhaust gas outlet and the second exhaust gas outlet for conducting a flow of exhaust gas from the first exhaust gas outlet and the second exhaust gas outlet out in an axial direction. The first exhaust gas outlet has an angular opening amount of more than 180 degrees around the turbine receiving bore. The second exhaust gas outlet has an angular opening amount of less than 180 degrees around the turbine receiving bore.

A flow control device for a turbocharger, the flow control device comprising a variably restricting flow restrictor for restricting flow in a turbocharger inlet by a variable amount, the flow control device being arranged such that the flow restrictor position varies flow restriction in response to force acting on a surface of the flow restrictor caused by a pressure pulse in a flow direction, the flow restrictor being biased in a direction opposed to the flow direction.
