Instrumentation and methods are provided for mounting a surgical navigation reference frame to a patient. A trocar may be positioned within a cannula to form an insertion device adapted for percutaneous introduction into the patient. A bone anchor having a bone engaging portion is inserted through the cannula for anchoring to bone. The bone anchor cooperates with the cannula to form a mounting device adapted for coupling with the surgical navigation reference frame. An image-guided surgical procedure may be performed at a location remote from the anchoring location. In a specific embodiment, a minimally invasive surgical procedure is performed, with a reference frame anchored to the pelvic bone, and more specifically to the iliac region of the pelvic bone. A second reference frame may be anchored to the femur.

Instrumentation and method for mounting a surgical navigation reference device to a patient

Prostheses and methods for repair of a cervical fact joint. The articulating surfaces of the natural facets of the facet joint are removed only a sufficient amount to allow the insertion of flat or slightly curvilinear portions of protheses therebetween in an overlapping relationship. The portions are so inserted and the prostheses mounted by attachment to adjacent vertebrae. Also, a single natural facet may be similarly repaired with a single prosthesis.

Replacement facet joint and method

A posterior fixation system includes a saddle member, an anchoring member, an occipital plate, an occipital rod, and a cross-link connector. The anchoring member anchors the saddle member to bone. The saddle member includes a pair of upright portions that define a channel. The channel is adapted to receive an orthopedic rod, and the saddle member can include a hole to receive the anchoring member. The saddle member and the anchoring member can be coupled so as to allow multi-axial movement of the members. The anchoring member in one embodiment is a screw coupled to the hole of the saddle, and in another embodiment, the anchoring member is a hook. The offset member may be coupled to the saddle member to allow for offset connection of rods. Connection of individual rods can be accomplished by connecting the rods with the cross-link connector. The cross-link connector has an integrally formed cylindrical member that couples a pair of coupling portions together. The cylindrical member can be bent along multiple axes. The occipital plate secures the rods to the occipital bone of the skull. The occipital plate has a cross-shaped plate with a plurality of apertures defined in the plate and at least one saddle member coupled to the plate. Alternatively, the occipital rod can be secured to the occipital bone.

Posterior fixation system

Prostheses and methods for repair of cervical fact joints. In one aspect, the articulating surfaces of the natural facets of a facet joint are removed only a sufficient amount to allow the insertion of flat or slightly curvilinear portions of protheses therebetween in an overlapping relationship. The portions are so inserted and the prostheses mounted by attachment to adjacent vertebrae. Also, a single natural facet may be similarly repaired with a single prosthesis. In another aspect, the invention provides a single prosthesis that is useful in repairing articulating surfaces in more than one cervical facet joint.

An instrument is provided for reduction of a rod or other elongated member into an implant, such as a bone screw. In one embodiment, such an instrument includes a rod adjusting assembly pivotably attached to an implant holding assembly. The implant holding assembly can be pivotably connected to an implant, and the rod adjusting assembly is operable to move a rod toward or away from the implant holding assembly. In that embodiment, several motions are possible by the instrument so that relatively small or large movements of a rod with respect to an implant may be made.

Reducing instrument for spinal surgery

In another specific embodiment, a minimally invasive surgical procedure is performed adjacent the hip joint, with a first reference frame anchored to the pelvic bone, and more specifically to the iliac region of the pelvic bone, and with a second reference frame anchored to the femur.

A bone anchor including a bone engaging portion and an elongate guiding portion. In one embodiment, the bone engaging portion includes a cannula passage extending at least partially through the bone engaging portion, and at least one transverse opening in communication with the cannula passage. The elongate guiding portion extends from the bone engaging portion and is configured to guide a device into engagement with the bone engaging portion.

Instrumentation and methods are provided for performing image-guided spinal surgery using an anterior surgical approach. In one embodiment, the method comprises providing a surgical navigation reference device, mounting the reference device to bone at a location remote from the spinal column and in a substantially fixed position relative thereto, accessing a portion of the spinal column from an anterior direction, and performing an image-guided surgical procedure on the spinal column using an anterior surgical approach. In another embodiment, the mounting of the reference device comprises anchoring the reference device to a portion of the patient's pelvic bone, and more specifically the anterior region of the iliac crest. In a further embodiment, the image-guided surgical procedure comprises a spinal implantation procedure wherein a spinal implant is inserted into an intervertebral opening formed along the lumbar region of the spinal column using an anterior surgical approach.

Instrumentation and method for performing image-guided spinal surgery using an anterior surgical approach

Spine fixation instrumentation including a rod and lateral mass screws which can be fixed at any of a range of orientations relative to the rod. Connectors are used to couple the rod and the screws. Sleeves are wedged between yokes on the one hand and the rod or shafts on the other hand. The sleeves are assembled and disassembled by instruments similar to pliers.
