A radiation monitoring system and method characterized by the use of paired active and passive radiation detectors to monitor exposure to a radiation field. The active detector provides an output representative of radiation exposure on a real time basis while the passive detector is readable on a delayed basis after exposure to radiation for a period of time to provide an output representative of radiation exposure over said period of time. Respective readers are provided for extracting the radiation exposure information from the detectors, as is a processor which determines a quantity of radiation exposure from the radiation information extracted from the detectors. The processor corrects radiation exposure data derived from one of the detectors using radiation exposure data derived from the other of the detectors.

Integrated dosimeter for simultaneous passive and active dosimetry

A dosimeter product that simplifies the process of dosimetry in medical diagnosis, therapy and other fields where high precision is needed. The dosimeter product is obtained by a unique training method which stabilizes the sensitivity of the dosimeter. Stability in sensitivity is established by a combination of high temperature cyclical annealing and low temperature furnace annealing. After the sensitivity of the dosimeters is stabilized, the dosimeters are then calibrated by generating for every dosimeter within a group element correction coefficients (ECCs) that compensate for the differences in sensitivity among the group of the dosimeters, bringing the sensitivity of each dosimeter to the sensitivity of the mean of the population. The result is a group of precalibrated dosimeters with stable sensitivity that are ready to use with established correction factors for individual TL response differences. This eliminates, among other things, the need for the end user to track individual dosimeters and to maintain annealing furnaces and fixtures. The dosimeters may be used to perform radiation dosimetry wherein the dosimeters are exposed to radiation after which the TL response of the dosimeter is read out. Accordingly, there is provided a dosimetry system comprising a dosimeter produced in accordance with the invention and a TLD reader for reading the TL response of the dosimeter. Also provided are an annealing tray and holder assembly useful in carrying out the method of the invention, a quench block and a storage case.

Trained dosimeters, method and apparatus

Apparatus and method for electronically screening abnormal glow curves of thermoluminescenct materials such as LiF:Mg,Ti in routine dosimetry, wherein glow curves with abnormal patterns are identified by examining a few key features from which information about background and thermoluminescent (TL) signals can be extracted. By analyzing the records of quality control (QC) cards that are in the same group as field cards, dosimeter- and reader-dictated parameters, such as the peak location, are automatically determined, thus eliminating the need for any prior knowledge of those conditions required for reference determination. The apparatus and method are applicable to dose levels down to at least 50 .mu.Sv.

Apparatus and method for screening abnormal glow curves

System and method for extremity dosimetry, that emables the maintenance of a chain of custody from dosimeter issuance to dosimeter read and further through multiple reuses of the dosimeter, are uniquely characterized by a reusable extremity dosimeter comprising a solid thermoluminescent (TL) body affixed as by bonding to a non-luminescent substrate that has integrally associated therewith indicia embodying a machine readable identification code. A preferred holder for the extremity dosimeter comprises a generally flat and flexible pouch that may be disposable, the dosimeter pouch including at least one pocket for containing the extremity dosimeter. Provision is made for attaching the dosimeter pouch to the body of a user at a specified extremity location such as a finger, wrist, toe, ankle, elbow, knee, forehead, etc. Also disclosed is a carrier for enabling the reading of the extremity dosimeters in TLD readers designed to read TLD cards containing multiple TL elements.

A TLD dosimeter and method of making same, characterized by assembling a solid body of TL material on a non-luminescent substrate with a non-luminescent liquid adhesive interposed between juxtaposed parallel surfaces of the TL body and substrate, and heating the assembly to cure the liquid adhesive thereby to bond the TL body to the substrate. The liquid adhesive is a polyimide. For bonding the solid body to a film substrate such as an aromatic polyimide film, the TL body and film substrate are pressed together during heating and the heating step preferably involves baking the assembly at a high temperature.

A system and related method for sensing a parameter of a medium by means of radiation attenuation, the system including a radiation source for emitting radiation that will be attenuated as a function of the parameter upon passage through the medium and a radiation detector operatively positioned to detect the radiation that will be attenuated as aforesaid, and the system being further characterized by the detector comprising a scintillator probe for producing an electrical current output proportionally representative of detected radiation, a current integrator for continuously integrating the electrical current output of the scintillator probe, the current integrator having an input for receiving the electrical current output of the scintillator probe and an output for producing an electrical output representative of the integral of curernt received at the input thereof, a charge injector for supplying to the input of the current integrator current pulses of predetermined total charge and of opposite polarity relative to the electrical current output of the scintillator probe in response to the output of the current integrator having a predetermined characteristic, and a detector output for generating count signals at a frequency proportionally representative of the frequency at which the current pulses are supplied to the input of the current integrator by the charge injector.

Process control system and method

A radiation detection and acquisition system including a plurality of radiation detector modules each characterized by the integration in a compact package of a scintillator probe and supporting electronics which provide digital pulse count signals in response to detected scintillations that may be transmitted by a differential line driver on twisted shielded wire pairs over great distances to a count signal processing unit while maintaining signal integrity. The digital pulse count output is independent of the type of radiation detected whereby the same count signal processing unit may be employed with different detectors for respective different radiations. The detector module may also have an analog signal output so that it may be interfaced to an analog signal analyzer and a third output of the detector module provides a digital output signal that reflects saturation of the electronics due to a high rate of detected scintillation events (pulse pile-up). A remotely located, microprocessor-based signal processing unit is provided to acquire count signals received on multiple channels from respective detector probes, to display such data and to transmit such data to a controller or monitor for process control and/or monitoring. Acquisition is effected via at least one detector/processor interface module having plural transmission line inputs for connection to respective detection modules and a common transmission line output for connection of said inputs to the signal processing unit.
