In accordance with at least one aspect of this disclosure, an ultraviolet radiation (UV) sensor includes a UV sensitive material and a first electrode and a second electrode connected in series through the UV sensitive material such that UV radiation can reach the UV sensitive material. The UV sensitive material can include at least one of zinc tin oxide, magnesium oxide, magnesium zinc oxide, or zinc oxide. The electrodes can be interdigitated comb electrodes.

A fuel and/or lubricant system for an engine can include an engine component configured to be in fluid communication with the fuel and/or lubricant, and an alternating current (AC) source electrically connected to the engine component to create an electric field of alternating polarity to subject particles within the fuel and/or lubricant to dielectrophoresis as the fuel and/or lubricant passes through the electric field to prevent deposits from forming on the engine component. In certain embodiments, the engine component can be a filter screen configured to filter the fuel and/or lubricant to subject particles within the fuel and/or lubricant to dielectrophoresis as the fuel and/or lubricant passes through the filter screen.

Prevention of deposits on engine components

A component includes a substrate formed from a metallic or ceramic material and a thermal barrier coating positioned on the substrate. The component also includes a ceramic reflective coating integral with the thermal barrier coating. The reflective coating includes an arrangement of features configured to reflect at a wavelength at which peak emission from a heat source occurs. A method of making a component includes positioning a thermal barrier coating on the component and determining a wavelength emitted from a heat source. The method of making a component also includes producing an arrangement of features using a metamaterial to form a reflective coating and integrating the reflective coating with the thermal barrier coating.

A method of fabricating an article includes providing an arrangement of loose nanowires, forming the loose nanowires into a gas turbine engine airfoil by depositing the loose nanowires into a mold that has a geometry of the gas turbine engine airfoil, and bonding the loose nanowires together into a unitary cellular structure that has the geometry of the gas turbine engine airfoil.

The invention is a bulk-processed thermoelectric material and a method for fabrication. The material measures at least 30 microns in each dimension and has a figure of merit (ZT) greater than 1.0 at any temperature less than 200&#xb0; C. The material comprises at least two constituents; a host phase and a dispersed second phase. The host phase is a semiconductor or semimetal and the dispersed phase of the bulk-processed material is comprised of a plurality of inclusions. The material has a substantially coherent interface between the host phase and the dispersed phase in at least one crystallographic direction.

The support is a homogeneous, nanocrystalline, mixed metal oxide of at least three metals, the first being cerium, the second being Zr, and/or Hf, and the third importantly being Ti, the three metals comprising at least 80% of the metal constituents of the mixed metal oxide and the Ti being present in a range of 5% to 45% by metals-only atomic percent of the mixed metal oxide. The mixed metal oxide has an average crystallite size less than 6 nm and forms a skeletal structure with pores whose diameters are in the range of 4-9 nm and normally greater than the average crystallite size.
