A composite component for a gas turbine engine is provided, along with its methods of formation. The composite component includes: an additively printed inner portion defining at least one flowpath feature, and a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) outer portion formed on the additively printed inner portion such that the CMC outer portion substantially surrounds the additively printed inner portion. The additively printed inner portion includes SiC; and the CMC outer portion includes a fiber reinforced ceramic matrix (e.g., including SiC) and defines at least one cooling cavity fluidly coupled to the at least one flowpath feature of the additively printed inner portion.

Composite component having an additively printed inner portion

Methods for manufacturing a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component are provided. The method may include building a plurality of successive layers of the ceramic component through a selective solidification of a composite feedstock comprising a plurality of composite granules and densifying the ceramic component through infiltration with silicon. Each of the plurality of composite granules comprises one or more silicon carbide particles and one or more carbon particles. Composite feedstocks are also provided, which may include a plurality of composite granules with each of the plurality of composite granules comprises one or more silicon carbide particles and one or more carbon particles.

Granulated feedstock for additively manufacturing ceramic components

Environmental barrier coatings including a bondcoat layer including silicon and a rare earth silicate-based hermetic layer and rare earth silicate-based non-hermetic layer are provided. The rare earth silicate-based hermetic layer is deposited on the bondcoat via a thermal spray process and has an elastic modulus ranging from 100 GPa to 180 GPa. The at least one rare earth silicate-based non-hermetic layer is deposited on the rare earth silicate-based hermetic layer and has an elastic modulus ranging from 50 GPa to 100 GPa. Coated gas turbine engine components and methods for coating gas turbine engine components are also provided.

An article for high temperature service is presented herein. One embodiment is an article including a substrate having a silicon-bearing ceramic matrix composite; and a layer disposed over the substrate, wherein the layer includes silicon and a dopant, the dopant including aluminum. In another embodiment, the article includes a ceramic matrix composite substrate, wherein the composite includes a silicon-bearing ceramic and a dopant, the dopant including aluminum; a bond coat disposed over the substrate, where the bond coat includes elemental silicon, a silicon alloy, a silicide, or combinations including any of the aforementioned; and a coating disposed over the bond coat, the coating including a silicate (such as an aluminosilicate or rare earth silicate), yttria-stabilized zirconia, or a combination including any of the aforementioned.

Articles suitable for use as high-temperature machine components include a substrate and an environmental barrier coating disposed over the substrate, where the environmental barrier coating includes at least one hermetic self-sealing layer formed from a mixture including an alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate and a rare-earth silicate, and where the at least one hermetic self-sealing layer exhibits substantially no net remnant or residual expansion when subjected to high temperature heat treatment. The environmental barrier coating can further include a bondcoat disposed between the substrate and the hermetic self-sealing layer, a topcoat disposed over the hermetic self-sealing layer, and/or an intermediate layer disposed between the hermetic self-sealing layer and the bondcoat. The intermediate layer can include a barrier material that is substantially inert with respect to silica.

Articles having reduced expansion and hermetic environmental barrier coatings and methods for their manufacture

An article for use in aggressive environments is presented. In one embodiment, the article comprises a substrate and a self-sealing and substantially hermetic sealing layer comprising an alkaline-earth aluminosilicate disposed over the bondcoat. The substrate may be any high-temperature material, including, for instance, silicon-bearing ceramics and ceramic matrix composites. A method for making such articles is also presented. The method comprises providing a substrate; disposing a self-sealing alkaline-earth aluminosilicate layer over the substrate; and heating the sealing layer to a sealing temperature at which at least a portion of the sealing layer will flow.

A battery stack includes a plurality of curved base layers, at least one curved bipolar layer, at least one anode layer disposed between a first curved base layer of the plurality of curved base layers and the at least one curved bipolar layer, at least one cathode layer disposed between the at least one bipolar layer, a second base layer and a plurality of seals. The first base layer and the at least one bipolar layer are provided with one or more seals that seal the first base layer to the at least one bipolar layer without contacting the anode and/or the cathode layer.

Stack design for Na NiCl battery

The present application provides for ceramic collars and metal rings for active brazing in sodium-based thermal batteries. The ceramic collar may be an alpha-alumina collar configured for active brazing, and thereby sealing, to outer and inner Ni rings for use in NaMx cells. The portions of the alpha-alumina collar active brazed to the outer and inner Ni rings may be outwardly facing and include inwardly extending recesses. The portions of the outer and inner Ni rings active brazed to the outwardly facing portions of the collar may be inwardly facing. The alpha-alumina collar may include a greater coefficient of thermal expansion than each of the outer and inner Ni rings, and the alpha-alumina collar and outer and inner Ni rings may be configured such that a portion of the outer and inner Ni rings is deformed into the inwardly extending recesses of the alpha-alumina collar after active brazing thereof.

A cell module and modular cell tray apparatus for a modular electrochemical device that are more easily manufactured and serviced. A cell module is provided having a plurality of electrochemical cells. The cell module includes an electrically conductive carrier element having a plurality of apertures, wherein each aperture is configured to accept a top portion of an electrode body of an electrochemical cell. A modular cell tray apparatus is provided having a plurality of the cell modules. The cell tray apparatus includes an electrically insulating tray having rows of cell receptacles to accept the cell modules. A modular electrochemical device is provided having a plurality of the cell tray apparatuses. The modular electrochemical device includes a plurality of electrical connectors configured to electrically connect the cell modules within a cell tray apparatus, and to electrically connect the cell tray apparatuses to each other.

Charging system using sodium level control in individual sealed anode tubes

An energy storage device includes a housing having an interior surface defining a volume and a plurality of solid electrolyte elements disposed in the volume. Each solid electrolyte element has a first surface that defines at least a portion of a first, cathodic chamber, and a second surface that defines a second, anodic chamber. A plurality of individual anodic chambers are thus provided, at least one of which is evacuated below atmospheric pressure. A majority of anodic chambers can be spaced from one another in a manner that provides a substantially uniform reaction rate throughout the cathodic chamber. The housing and the plurality of solid electrolyte elements together may be configured to define a second volume devoid of solid electrolyte elements and that is sufficient in size to accommodate a desired number of solid electrolyte elements and to provide an accessible cathodic chamber filling point and that is further sufficient in size to alter the volume of the cathodic chamber with respect to the volume of the plurality of anodic chambers to achieve a desired volumetric ratio between the cathodic and anodic chambers.
