A method is provided for seamless migration from a scaleable optical add/drop multiplexer to a network switching node in an optical transport network. The method includes: providing a pre-deployed optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) at a network node in the optical transport network; introducing an additional optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) at the network node; and interconnecting the pre-deployed OADM to the additional OADM using a photonic cross-connect switch, where the photonic cross-connect switch is operable to route optical signals amongst the optical transport lines connected to the pre-deployed OADM and the upgraded OADM.

Method of seamless migration from scaleable OADM to a network switching node

An optical cross-connect switch is provided for routing optical data signals in an optical transport network. The optical cross-connect switch includes a plurality of signal splitters, where each signal splitter receives an optical multiplexed signal therein and operates to partition the optical multiplexed signal into a plurality of optical multiplexed signals; a plurality of wavelength selective devices connected to the plurality of signal splitters, such that a wavelength selective device is disposed at each output of each signal splitter and operates at different wavelengths to manipulate optical data signals embodied in the optical multiplexed signal; and a plurality of signal combiners connected to the plurality of wavelength selective devices, such that each signal combiner is adapted to receive an optical multiplexed signal via a wavelength selective device from each of the plurality of signal splitters, and operates to pass the optical multiplexed signal to an outlet port of the switch, thereby routing optical data signals amongst the outlet ports of the switch.

WDM cross-connects for core optical networks

A wavelength demultiplexer having a substantially flat output response within its passband is disclosed. The demultiplexer comprises a first wavelength demultiplexer optically coupled to a second wavelength demultiplexer. The first wavelength demultiplexer has a free spectral range approximately equal to channel spacing of the second wavelength demultiplexer thereby providing the substantially flat output response within the passband. The first wavelength demultiplexer is a resonant optical cavity, absent distinct output ports, and light propagating between the first wavelength demultiplexer and the second wavelength deimultiplexer is unguided. The absence of distinct output ports in the first wavelength demultiplexer reduces ripples in the substantially flat output response within the passband. Alternatively, the first wavelength demultiplexer is replaced by an MMI-phasar.

Wavelength multiplexer-demultiplexer having a wide flat response within the spectral passband

An optical waveguide device has a hybrid core and a cladding. A first waveguide having a glass core is coupled to a polymer waveguide disposed adjacent and parallel to the first waveguide such that the respective cores are contiguous in a coupling region. The polymer is a thermo-optically active polymer. A heater is provided over the coupling region and the refractive index of the polymer is varied by applying heat to the region. By application of sufficient heat, the refractive index of the polymer can be changed to approach the refractive index of the cladding whereby the device acts as a simple glass waveguide. In the absence of heat, the device acts as a MMI coupler.

Active optical MMI waveguide device

An optical switch is disclosed which operates as binary or digital switch. Two glass waveguides are arranged in an X-like pattern such that they approach each other at a waist region without crossing over one another. A polymer region contacts both waveguides at this waist region and has a refractive index that can be changed more than that of the adjacent glass by applying heat. The refractive index of the polymer can be varied from an index which is same as the glass waveguides; to be less than that of the glass in which case the polymer acts as a cladding. When the index of the polymer is lower than that of the glass through the application of heat, light launched into one of the waveguides continues along the waveguide via total internal reflection and no light crosses the glass polymer boundary. When the index of the polymer is the same as the glass light propagates through the polymer from the first waveguide and crosses the polymer boundary so that switching occurs from the first waveguide to the second.

Optical switch

A wavelength demultiplexer having a substantially flat output response within its passband is disclosed. The demultiplexer comprises a first wavelength demultiplexer optically coupled to a second wavelength demultiplexer. The first wavelength demultiplexer has a free spectral range approximately equal to channel spacing of the second wavelength demultiplexer thereby providing the substantially flat output response within the passband. The first wavelength demultiplexer is an MMI-phasar having a tapered MMI coupler.

Tapered MMI coupler

A multi-mode interference coupler is disclosed for coupling light between ports. The MMI coupler is a planar waveguide having a first input port for launching light into a core of the planar waveguide which has first refractive index n . The waveguide is dimensioned to have a response that confines light launched therein to a single mode in one dimension, and multi-mode in another dimension. Two other ports are provided for receiving light launched into and propagating through the core from the input port. A polymer cladding of a second material having a refractive index n covers at least a portion of the core. A heater is provided and is thermally coupled to the cladding for heating the cladding when a control signal is applied.

MMI thermo-optic coupler

A method and circuit is disclosed wherein two waveguides coupled to an optical resonator are further coupled such that beams propagating therein interfere with one another to provide a desired output response. In one embodiment, multiplexed channels of light can be demultiplexed by the device described heretofore, or alternatively, the phase relationship between these two beams can be altered prior to their being combined to provide, for example, a linearized output response useful in applications such as wavelength locking.

Interferometric optical device including an optical resonator

Combinations of optically coupled Generalized Mach-Zehnder Interferometers (GMZIs) result in switches of greater switching capacity than an isolated GMZI. In a preferred form, the present invention provides a balanced non-blocking switch by using symmetrical configurations of optically coupled GMZIs, and also provides a cascaded non-blocking switch by cascading an N&times;N GMZI with a (N&minus;1)&times;(N&minus;1) non-blocking switch.

A method and circuit is disclosed wherein two waveguides coupled to an optical resonant ring resonator are further coupled such that beams propagating therein interfere with one another to provide a desired output response. In one embodiment, multiplexed channels of light can be demultiplexed by the device described heretofore, or alternatively, the phase relationship between these two beams can be altered prior to their being combined to provide, for example, a linearized output response useful in applications such as wavelength locking. By varying the reflectivity of the FSR and the coupling ratios and/or by varying the phase relationship between the two beams, a variety of desired output responses can be realized. By providing suitable coupling ratios and providing optical path lengths of the two waveguides which are identical between the ring resonator and the couplers coupling the two waveguides as well as having the couplers placed 180 degrees opposite to each other, an interleaver/de-interleaver function is realized.

An optical device is disclosed for interleaving or de-interleaving optical channels. A beam splitter combiner provides the function of splitting an incoming beam into two sub-beams which are then fed respectively to a first and second different GT resonator. The GT resonators provide a feedback signal in response to receiving the first and second sub-beams of light, respectively, to the beam splitter/combiner.

Bulk optic interleaver

An optical apparatus is disclosed that includes a first Z&times;T optical switch having Z input ports and T output ports, where T is at least 2, optically coupled to an integrated optical generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The result is an optical switch, which is operated using a smaller number of control elements and control levels than the generalized Mach-Zehnder interferometer alone.
