The whiteness and stability after processing of a polyolefin have been found to be improved upon the addition of a combination of at least one high activity phosphite and at least one hydrolytically stable phosphite.

Phosphite additives in polyolefins

A copolymer of ethylene and a higher alpha-olefin having broadened melt processing windows and reduced melt fracture can be produced using a chromium-containing catalyst system and a trialkyl boron cocatalyst. The polymerization process must be carefully controlled to produce a copolymer resin that easily can be made into articles of manufacture.

Olefin polymerization process

Poly(arylene sulfide/sulfone) polymers are treated in order to increase melt stability and decrease impurities by contacting the poly(arylene sulfide/sulfone) polymer with a soluble zinc compound and an acidic solution. In one embodiment, the polymer is treated first with the soluble zinc compound, followed by treatment with the acidic solution. In another embodiment, the polymer is treated in one step with a solution comprising a water soluble zinc compound in an acidic solution.

Treatment of polyarylene sulfide/sulfone polymers

Poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) polymers recovered from a reaction mixture produced by contacting at least one haloaromatic sulfone, at least one sulfur source, and a polar organic compound at polymerization conditions are treated with (1) a haloaromatic sulfone mixture comprising at least one haloaromatic sulfone and a polar organic compound followed by contacting the polymer with (2) a zinc compound. The two-step treatment improves the melt stability and extrudate quality of the polymer.

Method of treating poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) polymers and polymers

An aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer is prepared from a dihaloaromatic ketone, alkali metal sulfide, water and a polar organic compound. The polymerization reaction mixture is subjected to a heat soak at an elevated temperature, then a separation agent is added under controlled conditions and the mixture is subsequently cooled to provide a mixture comprising particulate aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer. Biaxially-oriented film is made from the recovered particles of aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer by (1) washing the polymer particles with an aqueous calcium salt, (2) heating the washed particles to remove water, (3) molding the heated particles to form a sheet of polymer, (4) biaxially stretching the sheet above the glass transition temperature of the polymer to form a film, and (5) heat-setting the biaxially-oriented film under stretching tension for a time and at a temperature to increase strength properties and density.

Production of biaxially-oriented film from aromatic sulfide/ketone

Poly(arylene sulfide) polymers containing sulfone, ether and biphenyl groups are prepared by a two step process. In the first step, a diphenol is reacted with either a dihaloaromatic sulfone monomer or a bis(haloarylsulfonyl) biphenyl monomer, or both, in the presence of an alkali metal base and a polar organic compound. In the second step, the reaction mixture above is reacted with a sulfur source, and any monomer which was not employed in the first step, if any. The polymers prepared according to the invention process exhibit increased glass transition temperatures over those of known poly(arylene sulfide) polymers. The structure of repeating units of the polymer can be controlled by varying the sequence of addition of the monomers.

Branched aromatic sulfide sulfone polymer is produced by contacting at least one dihalo aromatic sulfone, at least one polymerizable sulfur source other than lithium sulfide, at least one alkali metal carbonate, at least one organic amide, at least one alkali metal carboxylate, at least one polyhalodiarylsulfone having more than two halogen substituents and water including water of hydration under polymerization conditions for a period of time sufficient to form an aromatic sulfide sulfone polymer. The polymer exhibits higher melt and solution viscosity than obtained in the same process except without the use in the reaction mixture of polyhalodiarylsulfone having more than two halogen substituents and is useful in the production of coatings, films, molded objects, and fibers.

Branched aromatic sulfide sulfone polymer production

A first reaction mixture of at least one dihalo aromatic sulfone, at least one polyhydroxy aromatic compound, at least one organic amide and at least one alkali metal carbonate is contacted under polymerization conditions including a period of time at a temperature sufficient to form a reaction product, with the resulting product mixture being contacted with at least one polymerizable sulfur source, at least one organic amide, at least one alkali metal carboxylate, and water under polymerization conditions including a period of time at a temperature sufficient to form a branched aromatic sulfide sulfone polymer. The resulting polymers are useful in the production of coatings, films, molded objects, and fibers.

Process for preparing arylene sulfide sulfone/sulfoxide polymers

A two-step process to make a poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) polymer containing ether groups having high molecular weights is described. In the first step an aromatic diphenol, a dihaloaromatic sulfone, a polar organic compound and an alkali metal base are reacted at an elevated temperature. During the first step the reactor is vented. Subsequently, a sulfur source is added to form a poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) polymer containing ether groups. An alkali metal carboxylate is also present in the second step. The polymers prepared by the invention method exhibit higher inherent viscosities, indicating higher molecular weight.

Aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer is prepared from dihaloaromatic ketone, alkali metal sulfide, water and a polar organic compound. The polymerization reaction mixture comprising the aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer is subjected to a heat soak at elevated temperature then a separation agent (non-solvent) is added under controlled conditions and subsequently cooled to provide a mixture comprising particulate aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer. A phenylene sulfide/sulfone polymer with relatively good melt stability and a method of producing such a polymer are provided. A previously produced phenylene sulfide/sulfone polymer is redissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone to form a solution. This solution is combined with an alcohol to precipitate highly melt stable phenylene sulfide/sulfone polymer in a particulate form. The alcohol has one to four carbon atoms, such as methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, and the like and mixtures thereof.

Melt stable phenylene sulfide/sulfone polymers and method

This invention provides a process to produce aromatic sulfide/sulfone polymers exhibiting high molecular weight, and having a light or 'whitish' coloration. This process employs a dihaloaromatic sulfone, a sulfur-containing compound and a 1,3-dialkyl-2-imidazolidinone. These lighter colored polymers are more preferable commercially and may be useful in the production of coatings, films, molded objects, and glass or carbon fiber composites.
