Aerogel particles having a mean particle size less than 1 micron, products containing the same, processes of making the same, and uses thereof are described. A process of making the particle is also described wherein starting aerogel particles are homogenized or wet milled. The starting aerogel particles can be surface treated during the milling process to prevent agglomeration or aggregation. The aerogel particles can be used in a variety of products and applications.

Aerogel particles and methods of making same

The invention provides an anticorrosive surface coating composition comprising a resin system, and a hydrophobic metal oxide. The hydrophobic metal oxide is characterized by being produced via a wet process and having a surface area of at least about 350 m/g. The invention also provides a method of producing such an anticorrosive coating composition. The invention further provides a substrate having a surface coated with the surface coating composition of the invention, as well as a method of imparting corrosion resistance to a surface of a substrate.

Corrosion-resistant coating composition

The invention provides a matt, thixotropic paint formulation comprising a resin system and a matting agent. The matting agent comprises a hydrophobic metal oxide, which has a surface moiety (i.e., one or more surface moieties) selected from the group consisting of trimethyl silyl, vinyl dimethyl silyl, acryl dimethyl silyl, and dimethyl silyl. Morever, the paint formulation is characterized by having thixotropic properties such that it does not sag at a notch height of about 75 &mgr;m when measured with an anti-sag meter after application to a substrate. The invention also provides a method of producing such a paint formulation. The invention further provides a substrate having a surface coated with the matt, thixotropic paint formulation of the invention.

Matt, thixotropic paint formulation

The present invention provides a surface coating composition comprising a resin, a hydrophobic metal oxide, and a carrier, wherein said composition, after application to a substrate, is characterized by moisture resistance, organic alcohol resistance, and a matting effect. In addition, the present invention provides a method of matting a surface coating composition and enhancing the moisture and chemical resistance of the composition, as well as a method of treating a substrate with the surface coating composition, and a substrate coated with such a surface coating composition.

Surface coating composition

The present invention provides a recording medium comprising a substrate having a glossy coating thereon, wherein the glossy coating comprises cationic silica. The cationic silica comprises silica particles having a mean diameter of less than about 1 &mgr;m that have been contacted with at least one aluminum compound. The present invention also provides an aqueous dispersion of cationic silica, a coating composition comprising it, and methods of preparing the dispersion, coating composition, and recording medium.
