The method further includes segmenting abnormal tissue in the medical images from other tissue types and defining a region of interest (ROI) in the medical images. The method further includes creating a 3D model of the subject. The method further includes generating a plurality of transducer layouts for application of tumor treating fields to the subject, selecting at least two of the transducer layouts as recommended transducer layouts, presenting the recommended transducer layouts, receiving a user selection of at least one recommended transducer layout, and providing a report for the selected recommended transducer layout(s).

Alternating electric fields (e.g., TTFields) may be induced in a target region in a subject's body by applying, during each of a plurality of first time intervals, a series of pulses of alternating current between electrode elements positioned on or in the subject's body. Immediately following each first interval of time, the electrode elements are allowed to cool. Although the pulses of alternating current within any given first time interval have amplitudes at a level that would cause overheating if the series of pulses was allowed to continue for one hour, each series of pulses does not, in fact, continue for one hour. To the contrary, each series of pulses is short enough to avoid overheating. Interleaving the cooling periods between the pulsing periods enables higher-current pulses to be used, and the use of those higher-current pulses can advantageously improve the efficacy of treatment.

To plan tumor treating fields (TTFields) therapy, a model of a patient's head is often used to determine where to position the transducer arrays during treatment, and the accuracy of this model depends in large part on an accurate segmentation of MRI images. The quality of a segmentation can be improved by presenting the segmentation to a previously-trained machine learning system. The machine learning system generates a quality score for the segmentation. Revisions to the segmentation are accepted, and the machine learning system scores the revised segmentation. The quality scores are used to determine which segmentation provides better results, optionally by running simulations for models that correspond to each segmentation for a plurality of different transducer array layouts.

Evaluating quality of segmentation of an image into different types of tissue for planning treatment using tumor treating fields (TTFields)

A novel image-guided system for precise automatic targeting in minimally invasive keyhole neurosurgery. The system consists of a miniature robot fitted with a mechanical guide for needle, probe, or catheter insertion. Intraoperative, the robot is directly affixed to a head clamp or to the patient skull. It automatically positions itself with respect to predefined entry points and targets in a preoperative CT/MRI image following an anatomical registration with an intraoperative 3D surface scan of the patient facial features and a registration jig. The registration procedure is a novel three-way scheme, in which the intraoperative surface scan including the registration jig is matched to a model generated from the preoperative CT/MRI image, the robot position is known in relation to the registration jig, and the entry and target points are known from the preoperative CT/MRI image, such that the robot position can be related to the entry and target points.
