This invention employs discrete, free-flowing particles as substrates for the absorption of water as a phase changing, thermal payload. The aqueous payloads are retained in the particles as they cycle between freezing and thawing, delivering and absorbing sensible and latent heat. Extraparticualate additives in the form of finely divided hydrophobic solids prevent the particles from freezing together into a solid block in preparation for their use as a cooling agent. With free-flowing properties thus secured over a wide temperature range, cooling media of this invention are particularly suitable for healthcare applications.

Particulate cooling media and pads containing the same

Particulate agents of this invention typically consist of a hydrophobic, microwave transparent liquid contained in a microwave responsive substrate. Liquid and substrate are selected to be substantially free of attendant moisture. The liquid is readily absorbed into its substrate and retained therein by capillary forces. Aggregates of such particulate agents preheated by microwave energy contain stored dry heat which is transferrable to load objects. The particulate agents may be formulated to provide a desirable fragrance along with the delivery of heat.

Particulate agents for dry heat application

This invention discloses novel compositions of matter, in particulate forms, which function as heat transfer agents for heating or cooling applications. The particulates comprise solid carriers containing microwave responsive substances which are liquid at a predetermined elevated operating temperature. These particulate agents, preheated by microwave energy, serve as sources of dry heat or moist heat, depending on their composition. They also serve as sources of cold, when prechilled in a freezer.

Particulate heating/cooling agents

Materials and methods are disclosed for making microwave susceptor elements. The elements of this invention employ substrates, made of solid refractory materials, which are porous and liquid absorbent. The substrates, relatively microwave transparent per se, are rendered microwave interactive by a surface deposit of a finely subdivided microwave responsive substance. The substance is laid down from its dispersion in a volatile liquid medium which is later removed by evaporation. Susceptor elements thus made, be they large pieces or particulates, are uniquely suited for storing microwave generated heat up to elevated temperatures, subject only to the thermal stability of accessory materials. They also perform equally well in conventional ovens. The heat stored may be delivered to load objects during the heating step, in the oven, or afterwards, outside the oven.

Microwave susceptor elements and materials

The methods of this invention employ fluids which include non-aqueous and relatively non-volatile components as permanent and reusable microwave susceptors. The fluids, effectively contained for their intended heating functions, convert microwave energy into thermal energy which is stored in the fluids and their containers. The stored energy is utilized for the purpose of heating a load object.

Methods of heating with microwave susceptible fluids

A process for preparing a brewed beverage is presented. The process comprises providing a porous pouch containing an infusible material; at least partially immersing the pouch in water in a container; and subjecting the container to microwave heating under conditions effective to heat the water and to cause pulsation of the pouch.
