A motor includes a stator core, a rotor in rotational relationship with the stator core and a main winding on the core. In one form, the main winding includes a 4-pole configuration and an 8-pole configuration and the motor has a 4-pole auxiliary winding on the core. A switching circuit selectively simultaneously energizes a portion only of the 4-pole configuration of the main winding and the 4-pole auxiliary winding when starting the motor for energizing the main winding in the 8-pole configuration. In another form, the main winding includes a 2-pole configuration and an 4-pole configuration and the motor has a 2-pole auxiliary winding on the core. In this latter form, the switching circuit selectively simultaneously energizes a portion only of the 2-pole configuration of the main winding and the 2-pole auxiliary winding when starting the motor for energizing the main winding in the 4-pole configuration. Other forms include a 4/6/8 pole motor, an n/m pole motor and an n/m/p pole motor where n, m, and p are even integers and n<p<m.

Capacitor start single phase induction motor with partial winding starting

A single phase, three-speed Pole-changing electric motor has a stator and a rotor rotatably mounted within the stator. The stator includes a core having a plurality of slots, and a plurality of windings in the slots for operating at least three speeds. The windings are configured and arranged so that a substantial portion of the windings used in operating at one speed are used in operating at another speed. The reconnection of windings for different speeds is simple and easy to implement, for example with an external timer, switch, or relay.

Single phase three speed motor with shared windings

A motor comprising a 2/4-pole permanent-split capacitor motor having a shared main winding and a shared auxiliary winding. The shared auxiliary winding comprises a 4-pole auxiliary winding phase shifted one slot less than a phase shift of 90 degrees with respect to the 4-pole main winding. A switching circuit selectively simultaneously energizes the shared main winding and the shared auxiliary winding in the 2-pole and 4-pole configurations.

A rotor for a two-pole synchronous reluctance or a switched reluctance motor can be constructed from a stack of flat, planar laminations of grain-oriented materials. To enhance the necessary anisotropy of reluctance, slots are provided in the lamination along the magnetic flux lines in the preferred grain direction. The laminations may be provided with an essentially circular outer perimeter, and slots for a squirrel cage winding provided. A complete, efficient squirrel cage winding can thus be provided for a two-pole synchronous reluctance motor for starting purposes.

Line-start reluctance motor with grain-oriented rotor laminations

A single phase alternating current four pole/six pole capacitor run induction motor is provided having a stator assembly including three coil groups, each of the coil groups having four coil sets. Each of the winding sets can change the direction of current flow in its half of the coil sets by reconnecting the coil sets either in parallel or in series. For high speed operation, the coil sets of group one are connected parallel with one another, and in series with the similarly parallel connected coil sets of group two. This arrangement defines a four pole main winding for the motor. A pair of the coil sets of group three are connected in parallel with one another, and defines the four pole auxiliary winding for the motor. In six pole operation, the coil sets of group one 1 are connected in series to parallelly connected coil sets of group three to define the six pole auxiliary winding. The serially connected winding group two is in series with half of the parallelly connected coil sets of winding group three, thereby defining the six pole main winding for the motor. As a result, all coils of the windings are shared by both operations. At both speeds, the main and auxiliary magnetic motive forces are symmetrically distributed and have a ninety electrical degree phase shift in space. The performance at either speed of the motor closely simulates that provided by a single speed capacitor run motor of the same size.
