A method for managing battery longevity of an implantable medical device ('IMD') battery includes calculating a total IMD battery longevity value for an IMD and determining whether the total IMD battery longevity is below an optimal battery longevity value. At least one IMD parameter to be modified to improve the total IMD battery longevity value is automatically identified. The at least one automatically identified IMD parameter is adjusted to improve the total IMD battery longevity. Additionally, the improved total IMD battery longevity is displayed.

Systems and methods for managing the longevity of an implantable medical device battery

An apparatus and method for verifying capture by a selected pacing electrode in a multi-site pacemaker. A switching circuit switches the input of an evoked response sensing channel to an unselected electrode. A pacing pulse is then output by the selected electrode, and the presence or absence of capture is determined from the output of the evoked response sensing channel. In one embodiment, a backup pacing pulse is output by an unselected electrode if a loss of capture is detected.

One embodiment of the present invention relates to a method for managing battery longevity of an implantable medical device ('IMD') battery. In accordance with this embodiment, the method can include the steps of: (1) calculating an elapsed battery longevity value for the IMD battery; (2) calculating a remaining battery longevity value for the IMD battery; (3) calculating a total IMD battery longevity value from the elapsed battery longevity value and the remaining battery longevity value; (4) determining from the total IMD battery longevity value whether the IMD battery longevity is sub-optimal; (5) displaying IMD parameters that may be causing the sub-optimal IMD battery longevity; and (6) adjusting the IMD parameters to improve the IMD battery longevity.

A microprocessor based implantable cardiac treatment device having first and second clocks. The first clock is a continuously running external clock of a relatively low frequency for controlling low power, uncomplicated operations of the device. The second clock runs at a much higher frequency for controlling the complex, high power operations of the microprocessor. Clock control circuitry is provided for activating the second clock only when it is determined that high power calculations are to be made by the microprocessor.

A multi-pole pacing/sensing lead is used to measure the instantaneous impedance in the right ventricle of a patient's heart. The resulting impedance waveform is signal processed to obtain a measure of the time interval beginning with the occurrence of a paced beat or a spontaneous QRS complex (systole marker) and ending with the point where the impedance versus time signal crosses the zero axis in the positive direction following the paced or spontaneous QRS complex initiating the interval or some other predetermined point along the positive-going waveform. The resulting time interval is inversely proportional to the contractility of the heart and is found to decrease with exercise and the introduction of catecholamines. Thus, it can be used as a control parameter for a demand-type cardiac pacemaker. A means for obviating changes in pacing rate due to long-term drift in the impedance sensing circuitry is also disclosed.
